James Hugh “Jim” Wylie, 80, of Kiski Township, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024.
Born October 5, 1943 in Pittsburgh, he was a son of Florence (Wylie) Shields.
Jim’s desire to excel was always prevalent. Starting with many track records never broken in the Turtle Creek school district, which is now Woodland Hills. He prided himself with how fast he was, and would challenge the new young hires to race in the parking lot. Jim always won hands down.
After high school, Jim entered the Air Force, but departed with a medical discharge. He attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for drafting, and started working for GAI Consultants. Jim specialized in line art which was quickly becoming a lost art. His skill was noticed, and Jim started to freelance for Iron & Steel Magazine and the Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning & Development Commission (NWPRPDC), as well as several medical publications. Jim took pride in working for Dick Gray and Tony Digoia, and dedicated 35 years in various positions for them. His final years of work saw Jim manage the building for Pennsylvania Soil and Rock and Digoia-Gray. World renowned James Hamel, geotechnical engineer and Doctor of Philosophy, utilized Jim’s art skills well into his retirement. In Jim’s last days, he continued to dream of the artwork he did for these firms and always wanting to meet deadlines.
Jim was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Murrysville, where he helped design the cross that still hangs behind the pulpit. A copy of that cross was gifted to him man years ago and sits next to him now.
Jim’s pride and joy was to spend time with his sons Bart & Cody. From their early age he coached them in their individual soccer endeavors. Both sons preceded him in death, Bart in 2013 and Cody in 2018, and Jim never recovered from the loss.
In addition to his parents and sons, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Thomas Shields; and his nephew, Matthew Lee, who passed away on March 29, 2024.
Jim is survived by his wife Sharlene “Cherrie” (Borchers) Wylie, granddaughter, Dakota Jane Wylie; daughter-in-law, Kristan Wylie; sister-in-law, Pat Borchers; stepsister, Martha (Fred) Keong; nephew Steve (Annette) Lee; as well three great nieces and nephews; a great-great niece; and a great-great nephew.
