Peter G. Berkhout, Jr., age 83, of North Haledon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. He was born in Paterson, NJ to Dr. Peter Garret Berkhout, Sr., and Joanna (Struyk). He lived in New Jersey most of his life with the exception of working in So. Carolina for 12 years.

Peter was a proud graduate of Eastern Christian Schools, and then attended Calvin College where he received his bachelor’s degree in science. He then furthered his education at Fairleigh Dickinson University earning his master’s degree in chemistry. He dedicated his career as a chemist at Bayer Corporation.

Peter and Jean (Niemeyer), enjoyed 59 years of a loving marriage together. Peter was a former member of the Preakness United Reformed Church where he had served as an Elder. He was a current member of Pompton Plains Reformed Bible Church.

Peter is survived by his loving wife, Jean Berkhout, and his beloved children Peter G. Berkhout, III, and Cynthia Van Harken. He was a cherished grandfather to Richard, Brittany, Ross, Brent, Kaitlyn, Grayson, and Addison. He is also survived by his sisters, Francis Soderberg and Dorothea Berkhout.

Family and friends may visit the Berkhout family on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 4-8 PM at the Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ. Funeral service to be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 10 AM at the funeral home. Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
