Michael James Hug Obituary

Michael James Hug, 85, of Massillon, passed away Monday, September 30, 2024.
Born on July 15, 1939 in Canton to the late Lawrence V. and Hannah (Schuck) Hug Sr. Michael lived a life full of faith, purpose and joy. 
A proud graduate of Canton Central Catholic, Michael was a standout golfer. He was a lifelong member of Elms Country Club.
An Army veteran, he attended language school becoming fluent in Russian, and deployed overseas to serve our country during the Cold War.
Michael earned his degree Magna Cum Laude from Walsh College. The majority of his life he worked for TLT-Babcock, retiring after 27 years of service, leaving a legacy of hard work and dedication.
Michael was an active member of Divine Mercy Parish- St. Mary Campus, where he served as past president of the St. Vincent dePaul Society. His faith and service reflected his life long devotion to God and his community. 
He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Bergert) Hug; son, William Hug; daughter, Suzanne (Doug) Borden; brother, John (Sue) Hug; sister-in-law, Clarice Hug; granddaughter, Stephanie (Alex) Westerh; great-granddaughter, Reagan; stepson, Chris Bergert, and his children, Logan, Abbie, and Calvin; as well as stepdaughter, Megan (David) Bergert-Lin, and their daughter, Maya. Michael is reunited in spirit with his first wife of 46 years, Lydia Ann (Kurtz) Hug, and his brother, Lawrence Hug Jr.
Calling hours will be on Friday, October 4, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Heitger Funeral Home- Massillon Chapel, 639 1st St NE.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated later in the day at 11:00 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish- St. Mary Campus, 206 Cherry Rd. NE, with Reverend John E. Sheridan, J.C.L., V.F., as celebrant. Burial with military honors to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Massillon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Vincent dePaul Society of St. Mary, 2813 Lincoln Way W., Massillon, OH 44647, reflecting Michael’s enduring commitment to helping others.
