Neil Planty (1943-2024): A Legacy of Integrity, Service, and Family
Neil Planty, born November 22, 1943, to Walter and Eva (LaValley) Planty in St. Lawrence County, New York, passed away on September 29th,2024, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering integrity, selfless service, and devoted family leadership.
Throughout his life, Neil exemplified the virtues of honesty, hard work, and putting others first. His commitment to integrity was not just a personal trait but a guiding principle he instilled in his children and all who knew him. Neil's life was a testament to the power of doing the right thing, even when it wasn't the easiest path.
Neil's dedication to service began with his enlistment in the United States Air Force after high school. Over a distinguished 20-year career, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, embodying the values of duty, honor, and country. His military service took his family from New York to Mississippi, England, California, North Dakota, and Minnesota, broadening their horizons and strengthening their bonds.
Even after retiring from the military, Neil's commitment to service never wavered. He volunteered with Rolling Thunder and Hospice, supporting fellow veterans and those in need. Perhaps his most cherished role was as "Santa Neil" with the Santa America program, bringing joy and comfort to children and families in hospitals and hospices. These acts of service were more than volunteer work; they were the very essence of Neil's character, reflecting his deep-seated belief in the importance of giving back to his community.
Neil's influence on his children was profound and lasting. He taught them the value of hard work, the importance of integrity, and the joy of serving others. Whether he was fixing things around the house, renovating homes, or tending to his beloved garden (despite his personal dislike for vegetables), Neil showed his family the satisfaction that comes from a job well done and the fulfillment found in helping others.
A natural athlete in his youth, Neil's high school prowess earned him the nickname "Moose" and an induction into the Madrid/Waddington Hall of Fame. This competitive spirit and teamwork ethic carried through to his adult life, where he applied the same dedication to his family and community.
Neil is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda L. Planty, his brother Brice Planty, and his children: Tracy Williams (Jeff), Jeff Planty (Kathleen), John Planty (Elisa), Neil Planty II (Wendy), Brian Planty (JoAnn), Becky Planty, and Kim DePeaux (Cathy). His legacy lives on through his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by his love, wisdom, and example.
Neil Planty's life was characterized by his kindness, his readiness to help others, and his ability to fix anything that needed repair. But beyond these tangible skills, it was his moral compass, his dedication to service, and his love for his family that truly defined him. His absence will be deeply felt, but the values he lived by and instilled in others will continue to inspire and guide future generations.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the personnel of Regional Hospital and Heart to Heart Hospice of Terre Haute, IN, for their empathy, professionalism, and love during Neil's final days.
A celebration of Neil's life will be announced at a later date, providing an opportunity for all whose lives he touched to come together and honor a man who truly embodied the ideals of integrity, service, service, and family. Remembrances can be made through contributions to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
