When I come to the end of the road, And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?
Frances Patricia ‘Pat’ Grant Gibson, daughter of the late William Matthew Grant Sr. and Vivian Pierce Jordan Grant, began her life’s journey on January 11th, 1947, in Southampton County, Virginia. On the morning of Tuesday, October 1st, 2024, Pat peacefully gained her wings in the comfort of her son and daughter-in-law’s home in Courtland, Virginia.
At an early age, Pat was water baptized and became a devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Boykins, Virginia, under the leadership of Reverend John Walter Brown. During her time there, she served faithfully in various capacities, including as a member of the choir, the Usher Board, and the Willing Workers Club. In her adult life, Pat transferred her membership to First Baptist Church in Severn, North Carolina, where she continued to serve under the leadership of Reverend Elisha Barnes. There, she held roles as a Trustee, Choir member, Youth Leader, and Financial Secretary.
On May 24th, 1984, Pat married the love of her life, Leroy Thomas Gibson. Together, they embarked on a journey as business partners in their trucking company, sharing many miles and memories on the road until Leroy’s passing in April 2007.
Pat received her early education from the Northampton County School System, attending Willis Hare High School. After relocating to Hertford County, she continued her education and graduated from Calvin Scott Brown High School in Winton, North Carolina. She furthered her studies at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro and later graduated from Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie, North Carolina.
Throughout her life, Pat worked for numerous companies, demonstrating her strong work ethic. During the summers and after school, she worked at Mylecraft Manufacturing Company and Rollics, Inc. She also served as a Teacher’s Aide at Willis Hare High School. Later, Pat moved to Yonkers, New York, where she impressively held three jobs simultaneously: as a Manager at McDonald’s, a worker at Reader’s Digest, and as an employee of the United States Postal Service, from which she eventually retired. In 1995, Pat returned to North Carolina and later worked as a Lieutenant at Sussex #2 Correctional Facility, retiring from there as well. Afterward, she continued her service at Southampton Detention Center in Courtland, Virginia, where she retired once more.
Pat was a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 115 (Queens) in Boykins, Virginia. She was deeply committed to her church and community, serving faithfully in every role she undertook until her health no longer allowed her to continue.
Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leroy Gibson; her parents, William and Vivian Grant; her brother, Joseph F. Grant; and her sister, Doris Grant Branch.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her family: two sons, Albert M. ‘AB’ Grant (Annette) of Severn, North Carolina, and Darren O. Grant (Gail) of Courtland, Virginia; one daughter-at-heart, Toye Branch (Troy) of Greenville, North Carolina; goddaughter, Marrieal Gibbs of Charleston, South Carolina; grandchildren, Allajah Marriel, Allijah Marsalis, Tywon Nasir, KaToya Dominique (Erel), Adasia Shantel, Audrey, Mya, Mia, Taionna; great-grandchildren, Maison Faison, Dakota Faison, Taylon (Big T), Ari Nicole, Aiden Terel, Arrianna, Ronald Jr., Brielle Leigh, Kynnedi, Royce, Reina, and Ivory; seven stepchildren: Anthony, LaVonda, Leroy Jr., Barbara, Wanda, Gail, and Lisa; seven brothers, William Jr. (Daphine), Walter, Willie Louis (Denise), Warren (Natalie), Michael (Debbie), Melvin (Patricia), and Keith; three sisters: Rachel, Ueritta (Billy) and Sharon; sister at heart; Jocelyn Bason Smith. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and countless friends.
Pat will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her dedication to family, and her lifelong service to her community and church. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
