Paul R. Hoffman Obituary

Paul Hoffman, age 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Quogue, NY, on Monday, September 30, 2024. A proud veteran of the Korean War, Paul served in the U.S. Navy. Though it was a difficult time being away from his loved ones, he always carried a quiet yet deep sense of honor and privilege in serving his country.

Paul married the love of his life, Wilma, from the Bronx, who predeceased him. Together, they had 3-children, shared a life full of cherished moments with friends and family, good food, and long talks on the veranda of their home. He was known for his deep love of dogs (Candy, Meeshoo & Shadow), his enjoyment of ice-cold vodka from the freezer, and a good red wine. Paul was also a consummate negotiator, especially when it came to buying cars — of which he owned too many to count. Paul enjoyed cooking occasionally and was excellent at it. He also had a passion for buying, fixing, and flipping cars. In addition to his love of automobiles, Paul perfected the art of day trading in his retirement years.

Despite being a simple man, Paul was a pillar of loyalty, maintaining lifelong friendships that spanned decades. His love for his family ran deep, though he often carried his worries quietly. From his early days playing stick ball in the Bronx to living in Queens, Sayville, Moriches, and finally Quogue, Paul lived a full and vibrant long life.  He very much enjoyed when his children and grandchildren came for a visit.

A lover of music, Paul’s tastes spanned from rock to R&B to Joss Stone. His daughter even took him to see Tina Turner live at Jones Beach, knowing how much he loved her music. Paul also had a green thumb, tending to his plants for decades with care and dedication.

During a challenging period of recovery and rehabilitation, Paul found great comfort and support from Ruth Gilks, his nurse aide from East Quogue, whose daily care meant the world to him, always going above and beyond the call of duty.

Paul is survived by his 3 children, sons Steven, Larry and daughter Andrea; daughter-in-law Missy; two grandchildren, Jordan and Ian; his beloved granddogs, Cooper and Beans; his sister, Arlene Fuchs of Florida; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is also predeceased by his parents, Abe and Shirley, as well as his in-laws, Sadie and Louis, all of whom had become such close friends. Paul’s experience, wisdom, and devotion to his family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter, in honor of Paul's lifelong love for dogs.
