Steven Allen McConnaughey, 70, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Doey's House, Hospice of Washington County.
Born Tuesday, July 20, 1954, in Washington Court House, OH, he was the son of the late Willard A. McConnaughey and the late Loretta J. Hatfield McConnaughey.
Steve proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Independence (CV-62) from 1973 to 1977, which spanned the Vietnam War. He received Congressional Recognition including a Medal of Honor for service during wartime. After being honorably discharged from the military, Steve began his 21 year career with Potomac Edison. During his years of service with the company, he served in a multitude of roles including lineman, scheduler, and accountant. During this time, Steve achieved a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Shenandoah University. After receiving his Master's Degree from Mount St. Mary's University, he completed the remainder of his career as Chief Financial Officer for National Auto Auction Association, retiring in 2022 after 20 years of service. Steve was a man of deep faith, displayed by his genuine kindness and acts of service for others. He was an active member of several churches during his lifetime. He had a deep love for family and enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and engaging in activities that brought others joy. Steve truly loved life and sharing it with others.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 and half years, Beverly McConnaughey; sons, Justin McConnaughey and wife Stephanie, Kevin McConnaughey and wife Elizabeth; sister, Lyn McConnaughey; brother, Gary McConnaughey and wife Lena; grandchildren, Tyce, Jeremy, Lincoln, Hailey, and Maclin; brother-in-law, David Maul and wife Connie; nephews and nieces, Wesley McCoubrie and wife Deanna, Molly Agosta and husband Richard, Christy McConnaughey, Nicholas McConnaughey and wife Jessica, Karen MacDonald, Jonathan Gartner, Matthew Pressel and wife Kellie, Angela Frobish and husband Scott, and Donald Maul and wife Amber.
He was preceded in death by his sisters-in-law, Marilyn Gartner and husband Rev. Allen Gartner and Arlene Carbaugh and husband Wayne Carbaugh.
Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Services will be held Friday, October 4, 2024, at 10:00 am, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, MD, with the Pastor Twyla Rowe officiating.
A committal service will be held privately with the family at the Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA on Friday, October 4, 2024. Pallbearers will be Gary McConnaughey, Justin McConnaughey, Tyce McConnaughey, Jeremy McConnaughey, Kevin McConnaughey, and Lincoln McConnaughey.
