Anne Elizabeth Lane Long
April 20, 1927-September 29, 2024
Born in Lincolnton Georgia to Henry Grady Lane and Elizabeth Amanda Fuller Lane both deceased.
Also preceded in death, her beloved brother, George Mitchell Lane (Nell, deceased)
Anne graduated high school in Cookeville, Tn. and earned her BA from Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga. Later claimed her Master's degree and a Sixth-year educational administration certification.
Like her mother, Anne was a teacher and began teaching school in Cartersville, Ga. where she met and married James (Jimmy) F. Long, (deceased). She retired after 30 years of teaching 4th, 5th, 8th, high school and the gifted program.
Her four children; Special needs child; James (Little Jim) Long Jr.,(deceased) Sallie Elizabeth Long Sirmon (Bill), Martha Anne Long Alvis, Charles Mitchell Long (deceased). Grandchildren; Linda Katheryn Alvis (Heath), Joyce Elizabeth Sirmon Watkins (John), John Lane Sirmon (Heidi). And four great (really great) grandchildren. Niece; Deborah Anne Lane Abitante (Peter)
Anne was known for her fiercely independent spirit, love of special needs children, dedication to education, and love of history.
Anne and Jimmy together with other parents in Cartersville raised funds, hired a teacher and together with other parents organized the first local school for mentally handicapped children.
She was an unmatched (and unofficial) Couch Jeopardy Champion and a devoted Atlanta Braves Fan. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Rome, Ga for almost 50 years, Anne was current on church as well as state and national politics and could debate and defend her views and opinions until long after dark. Her sharp tongue earned her merciless teasing from her Tennessee cousins whom she adored.
Anne deeply loved her time at Indian Springs Holiness Campground. That legacy of love continues to children and grandchildren and the really great grandchildren. She will be remembered when we repeat her saucy phrases, colorful stories and eat good food on her china which, growing up, we were not allowed to use.
