Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Gold, 97, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away on September 29, 2024. He was born on August 8, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was the son of Theodore and Rose (Rubin) Gold. Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Shirley Gordon, who passed away on August 24, 2022.
Jerry’s life was marked by his dedication to both his country and his profession. He served in the Army at the end of World War II and again during the Korean War, where he worked as a hospital pharmacist. Following his military service, Jerry pursued higher education at the University of Pittsburgh, earning his B.S. degree in 1951, his M.S. degree in 1958, and his Ph.D. in 1961, all in Pharmacy.
In 1961, Jerry, Shirley, and their three children moved to Elkhart, Indiana, where he began his career at Miles Laboratories as a Research and Development Pharmacist. Over 26 years, he made significant contributions in his field before moving to Accra Pac (later KIK Custom Products) as a product development pharmacist, where he worked for 10 years. Even after his official retirement, Jerry continued consulting and contributing to the pharmaceutical industry.
Throughout his career, Jerry wrote numerous journal articles and held five patents, including one for a powder flowmeter and another for Alka-Seltzer Plus. His expertise in effervescent technology earned him national recognition, and he was honored as a Fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Jerry was actively involved in his community, supporting his wife’s long tenure as president of the League of Women Voters of Elkhart County. He was also a member of the Midwest Museum of American Art for 45 years. In his free time, Jerry enjoyed reading, gardening and birdwatching.
He is survived by his children: Jody (William) Comer of Elkhart, Robert (Rebecca) Gold of Newburgh, and Cynthia (Michael) Ebersol of Mishawaka. His legacy includes his grandchildren: Dr. Adam (Dr. Amber) Comer, Megan (Dr. Parag) Badami, Timothy Gold, David (Stephanie) Ebersol, Rachel (Jerry) Skelton, and Daniel (Rebecca) Ebersol, and great-grandchildren: Amelia Comer, Annabelle Comer, Benjamin Badami, Kennedy Ebersol, Logan Skelton, Rivka Skelton, Eliana Skelton, and Levi Ebersol.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley, a granddaughter Elizabeth Comer, and his sister Sylvia Snow.
His family and friends will remember him for his dedication, achievements, and the love he shared with those around him.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 11:00 am in the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery chapel in Mishawaka, Indiana. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
