Dorothy M. Martin Obituary

Dorothy M. Martin, age 85, of Edwardsville, died at 2:52 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Illinois Veterans Home, Lester Hammond Hall in Quincy, IL.


She was born February 22, 1939 in Poplar Bluff, MO, the daughter of the late Samuel and Rosa (Scott) Skief. She married Harold “Hal” Martin. He preceded her in death July 22, 2023.


She is survivied by her daughters, Kimberli Yount Goodner and Deirdre Johnson Highley & husband Jeff of Edwardsville; stepson, Mark Martin and wife Paula of Worden; eight grandchildren: Brandeana Bertels Breden & husband Jeremy, Brooklyn Bertels & partner Jon, Travis Bertels & wife Shannon, Trevor Taynor & fiancee Brianna, Jessica Highley Deaver & husband David, Logan Highley & partner Rachel, Briley Martin and Piper Martin; eight great-grandchildren, Gabriel Deaver, Aurora Deaver, Jacob Deaver, Drew Breden, Davis Bertels, Jack Breden, Finley Bertels, Kate Breden; a sister Alma Kohler of Edwardsville; numerous nieces and nephews.


Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters: Alberta Smith, Lois Seals and Dorcas Smith; and by her brothers: William (Jim) Skief, Robert (Bill) Skief, and Samuel Skief, Jr.; and son-in-law Duane Goodner.


Dorothy was a 1957 EHS graduate, with college courses at Citrus College in California.

She worked several places from; secretary at Fedco in Pasadena, CA; Baker at the Bread Box on Main St. in Edwardsville; volunteered with Madison County Prison ministry; taught reading to adult literacy program; enjoyed church, sewing – donating many quilts to Jefferson Barracks Veteran Rehab Center and aprons to local children.


Dorothy grew up in an old house on Sunset Hill in Edwardsville. She knew what it was like to have little food. So in lieu of flowers, we ask for donations to The Glen/Ed Pantry in Edwardsville.


A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Main Street Community Center, 1003 N. Main St. Edwardsville, IL.
