Mrs. Delores Brewton Brown, of 602 Real Quiet Court, York, SC was born January 19, 1932 in Spartanburg County. She departed this life on September 29, 2024 at home with her daughter. Aged 92, she was the youngest child of the late James and Bertha Brewton.
She grew up in Roebuck, SC where she attended Foster Chapel Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her grandmother and her cousins. Mrs. Brown always talked about the time a tornado was coming and she, as a very young child, was with her grandmother. Her grandmother ran across the field holding her while trying to get to safety, but tripped and fell on top of her into a ditch. This most likely saved their lives as the storm passed over. Mrs. Brown loved her family and visited the ones nearby as often as she could.
Mrs. Brown made her career as a school teacher. She attended Friendship College and Benedict College, and North Carolina A&T State University where she received her Master’s Degree in elementary education. Mrs. Brown taught at several schools throughout her teaching career, and retired in 1990 from Bethel Elementary School in Clover, SC after 32 years. After retirement, she did a multitude of substitute teaching in North and South Carolina. Mrs. Brown also taught adult education in Clover, SC for many years.
Mrs. Brown was truly a wonderful and legendary woman with many special qualities, and especially in the Clover community. She was always immaculate, fashionable and loved to wear her high heeled shoes to work. Mrs. Brown loved good music and she loved her children and grandchildren. She was respected and loved by all who knew and loved her.
After getting married and moving to Clover, she became an active member of Flat Rock Baptist Church where she attended for many years until her health failed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Bertha Brewton; her husband, Wilbert Brown, Jr.; her oldest son, Delbert P. Brown; two sisters, Jimmie Lee Jordan and Clalice Johnson; and a granddaughter, D’Angela Brown.
She leaves to cherish her memories her son, Lincoln Brown of Phenix City, AL; her daughter, Berthenia Barnett of York, SC; grandsons: Xavier Brown of Fayetteville, NC, Austin Brown of Jacksonville, FL, Wilson Barnett and Juwan Barnett both of York, SC; her granddaughters, Shuntae Brown of Winston-Salem, NC, Bria Unkudu (Sahias) of Jonesboro, GA, and Aria Brown of Jacksonville, FL. Mrs. Brown also had eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who were very special to her and will truly miss her presence.
