Calvin Isaiah Grier Jr. Obituary

Calvin Isaiah Grier, Jr. was born on April 26, 1943, to Isaiah and Exie Pearl Grier in Covington, Georgia. Calvin lived his young life in Detroit, Michigan with his siblings, Marvin, Shirley, Lorenzo, Sarah, and George Grier. It is there that Calvin's strong commitment to family came to light.

When the family moved from Georgia to Detroit, Michigan Calvin's parents preceded him in death while Calvin and his siblings were still adolescents. In order to keep the family together Calvin cared for his younger siblings. He balanced caring for his younger siblings with going to school himself.

Eventually, school officials discovered that Calvin was caring for the family and came and separated the children. Calvin was committed to education, so he continued in school, until he graduated from Northeastern High School.

It was at Northeastern High where Calvin met the love of his life, Alice Battle. Calvin and Alice were joined together in holy matrimony in August of 1964. Shortly Afterwards the two welcomed their daughter Carmela Grier and Calvin begin his career at General Motors where he worked until he retired after working 36 years.

In May of 1979 Calvin and Alice welcomed their son, Motoya Grier. The couple celebrated 60 years of marriage on August 15, 2024. Calvin's strong commitment to family was again evident since he nurtured and cared for various other young men and women to which they affectionately call him

"Pops." Calvin and Alice have 3 God sons (Dr. Darius (Dr. Jennifer) Hollings, Derrick Lee Evans, Pierre Guy] and 3 God daughters (Tonya Guy, Yvette Hunt, Kim Sanders) which they consider their own children investing in their Maturation. Calvin and Alice have 3 Grand Children from Carmela [Donshe' (deceased) and Ebonee' Grier, Tosha' Banks (Trinity and Talia) Great Grandkids] and a host of Grandchildren from their other sons and daughters.

Calvin loved motorcycles and he rode his Harley Davidson motorcycle until age 80. He loved beautifying his lawn and his neighbor's lawns. He never met a stranger and hated to see anyone going hungry. If he encounters a hungry person, he would take them and buy them food to which he has done to hundreds of individuals over his lifetime. Calvin without fail gave money to his two favorite charities, St Jude's Hospital for Children and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen on Mt. Elliot Street in Detroit.

Calvin was a faithful member of Robinson Memorial C.O.G.I.C., Lansing, Michigan, where Michael A. West was his Pastor.

Calvin Isaiah Grier Jr. was 81 years old when he passed away on September 25, 2024, at Henry Ford Hospital after a brief illness. Calvin was predeceased by his parents Isaiah and Exie Pearl, sister Shirley and grandson Donshe. He is survived by his loving wife Alice, his children Carmela (Pastor Michael A.) West, his son Motoya Grier, brother George Grier, sister Sarah XXX and a host of other god-children, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and associates.
