Sammie Lee Carter Sr. was born on June 6, 1950, to Pastor George & Luberdia Whitley Carter in Ferriday, Louisiana. Sammie known as “Sam” departed this life on September 16, 2024, in Baton Rouge ,Louisiana.
Sam left his hometown of Ferriday, Louisiana, at a young age and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he began his adult journey. In New Orleans, Sam secured employment, found love, and built a family, becoming a devoted husband, father, and provider.
In 1982, Sam accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized into the Franklin Street Church of Christ, where his faith became a cornerstone of his life. He later placed membership with Luling Street Church of Christ until 2001.
Sam's hardworking nature led him to become an entrepreneur, owning and operating a mechanic shop, dump truck service, and tire shop. He was also a dedicated employee of the Jefferson Parish Street Department, where he worked for many years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. He held many jobs such as a sand blaster & painter, construction worker, and a maintenance person at Camelot Leisure Living center in Ferriday, Louisiana until God called him home. He loved his job and the people in the facility.
Sam's hobbies were watching his favorite football team the New Orleans Saints, fishing, and cooking up his fish while hanging out with friends. He had a charming sense of humor, (we would often wonder if he had his own urban dictionary with the words he would say).
Sam was a good father; He always encouraged his children to get an education and develop skills to be successful adults. He would also talk about the Lord and encourage them to put him first in their life.
Sam is preceded in death by his father, George Carter, his mother, Luberdia Carter, eleven sisters, five brothers and his great granddaughter, Aariah Henry.
The memories shared with Sam will be cherished by his sons Patrick (Nikisha) Beverly, Sammie (Dannell) Carter Jr., Brian (Malanda) Carter Sr., & Eugene (Kindy) Carter, Sr. As well as his two daughters Terri Pavageau and Marlene (Vaughn) DeArmas. Two stepdaughters Deshanda Simmons and Brandy Kennedy. His brother, Joe Carter, his two sisters, Bishop Jennie Kimble & Porline (Carter, Lewis) Brown; one aunt, Mother Mary Carter and 30 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
