Wiley Williams Obituary

Wiley Rodden Williams a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully Monday, September 16, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, service and cherished memories. He was a devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church in East Austin, a historical black church known for its radical hospitality, where he found community and spiritual nourishment. Wiley was born April 19, 1935 in Bellaire, Texas and raised in Pierce, Texas. He was a proud graduate of Crescent Colored High School, where he achieved the honor of Valedictorian, before the school later became T.L. Pink. His pursuit of education continued at St. Philip's College in San Antonio, Texas and Southwest Texas State in San Marcos, where he earned his Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science in 1979, a milestone he took great pride in as a loyal Southwest Bobcat. Wiley served honorably in the United States Army for over fourteen years as a Radar Technician, completing two tours in Korea and one in Germany. Following his military service, he began a successful twenty-year career with Xerox Corporation, working as a Machine Repair Technician and area manager before retiring with his wife, Luebirty, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Wiley and his wife later relocated to Austin, Texas to be closer to family. He loved music, particularly the soulful sounds played on his reel-to-reel player, and found joy in barbecuing while entertaining family and friends. He was an avid golfer and bowler and a dedicated traveler, achieving his lifelong dream of visiting the Panama Canal. Wiley also proudly visited nearly all of the U.S. National Parks. Wiley was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Williams and Ogna O. Pruitt, five brothers, three sisters, and a grandchild, Latisha Hurst. He is survived by his devoted wife of seventy years, Luebirty Williams; three daughters, Jacqueline McCall, Arlene Williams and Carmelita Makaea; two sons, Joel Williams and Wiley Williams II; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren who will forever cherish his memory.
