With family by his side, Ulis Barfuse passed away Thursday September 6, 2018, at 6:35 p.m. in his home town of Fall City, Washington, succumbing to heart failure. He was 85 years old. Ulis was born at home in Fall City, Washington to William "Bill" and Hazel Barfuse. The day Ulis was born the Snoqualmie River flooded up to and inside the family home. His parents could not get to the hospital because the water was so high, so Dr. Cheney had to come in a row boat to deliver him. Ulis had an older brother Albert and 1946 his younger brother Duane was born. He and his brothers worked the family farm. It was one of the bigger farms in the area, milking 24 cows. Most farmers had between 5 and 12 cows. When he was six years old Ulis drove the truck, his father would put the truck in gear and pull the throttle out and off he would go. One time he fell asleep and ran into a fence. Albert had tried waking Ulis up by beating on the roof of the truck. Ulis went to Mount Si High School until the end of his sophomore year. He quit school to work for Weyerhaeuser. When he was 19 years he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany. While home on leave on May 3, 1953, Ulis married Jo Ann "Jody" McGann at his Grandmother Margaret Parmenters home in Seattle, WA. Returning home from Germany he worked for two years at the fish hatchery for the Washington State Department of Fish and Game in Fall City, Washington. His career changed as his family grew Ulis joined the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) Locals 240 and 242. In 1966 and 1967 he followed the work to Oregon where he high climbed power towers. From 1967 to 1975 he worked as a labor doing many jobs including I-90 project. In 1973, Ulis went to Fairbanks, Alaska. In Alaska he worked from the North Slope of Alaska to the northern most ice-free port in Valdez, Alaska. While he was working in Alaska in April 1977 Jody purchased the restaurant located on Hwy 203, which she named the Other Place. Whenever he had free time he was at the restaurant washing dishes, cooking, taking money, and cleaning the ice cream machine. Ulis worked both in King and Snohomish Counties on jobs that included the Seattle Veterans Hospital, Snoqualmie Falls Lodge and Paine Field Airport. When Ulis retired as a labor with over 30 years with the union he felt he was too young to retire so he put in for a general maintenance position with the Washington State Patrol. He was hired and worked at Bow Hill Weight Station located in Skagit County. In June 1990, Jody passed away. In 1991, he officially retired and enjoyed staying busy going to garage sales and finding good deals. Ulis was always there for his family and friends working on vehicles, using his backhoe, power washing, welding, pouring concrete, and any other job that needed to be done. In 1999, he met Patricia Beagle and soon they become a couple. Together they enjoyed antiquing, traveling, camping, watching and going to Mariners Spring Training. Ulis was always active tinkering around his place and his parents place. He kept busy working on his 1946 Mercury and 1931 Model A Ford. He was very proud of the fact that he was never without a job when one job was completed he was always able to find a new job the next day. Family was important to Ulis. He is survived by his eight children: Jo (Steven) Ray, Ulisa Whiteman, Georgia (Joseph) Loranger, Virginia (Jim) Keys, William Barfuse, Thomas Barfuse, Samual Barfuse, and Hazel Barfuse, his eleven amazing grandchildren: Shasta (Anthony DAlessio) Ray, Bradley Savage, April Savage, Michael (Heather) Ray, Crystal Savage, Jody Loranger, Casey Keys, Kelly (Josh Garcia) Loranger, Michael Keys, Rachel Barfuse-Bangs, and Kendra Whiteman. As well as his ten outstanding great grandchildren: Jocevus Schultz, Zack Ray, Austin Gonzalez, Brennan DAlessio, Trevor Johnson, Marcus DAlessio, Kayden Rogers-Barfuse, Sophie Jo Ray, Corbin DAlessio, and Jacoby Garcia. Uliss celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday September 29, 2018, at 4304 337th Place Southeast, Fall City, Washington 98024. Chaplain Martin Redman will officiate the ceremony. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Fall City Fire Department or the American Heart Association. Ulis will be missed by family and his many friends.
