Alvin Eugene Goodwyn Obituary

Alvin Eugene Goodwyn, 93, of Willingboro, New Jersey, departed this life on Monday, September 16, 2024 at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, where he was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 2, 1931, to the late Herbert George and Lillian Burton Goodwyn in Cheriton, Virginia.

Alvin was educated in the Northampton Public School System in Virginia. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the military. Alvin proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army where he received a Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.

Alvin was united in marriage to Ivy Ruth on January 22, 1994, and has been happily married for over 30 years.

Over the years, Alvin worked at various companies in the Skillman, Princeton, and Trenton, NJ areas prior to and after joining General Felt Industries, Inc., where he worked as a Foreman for many years until its closure. His last role before retirement was as a Transport Driver for Medi-Transport, a role he took great pride in.

Alvin was a dedicated servant of the Lord, faithfully serving as a Deacon at Living Word Ministries Christian Center. His commitment to faith, family and community was evident in every aspect of his life.

Alvin was an avid fisherman, hunter and a jack of all trades who could fix and build anything. He loved watching Westerns, football, and sitting in his special chair watching his favorite shows over the years, including The Haves and the Have Nots, Sistas, Love and Marriage Huntsville, and Ready to Love - just to name a few. He was described by many as a kind and gentle soul and a quiet but strong man. To others, he was a bonus Dad and Pop-Pop. He was the Patriarch of the family and a true protector of those that he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Lillian Goodwyn; siblings, Hattie Jarmon (Carlton), Lafayette Goodwyn, and Georgia Riddick (Marvin); father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jesse and Nedy Mae Woodland; and in-laws, Clarence Woodland (Helen), Marcile Nelson (Allen), and Donna Marie Woodland.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Ivy Goodwyn; daughters, Monica Caul (Marcus), Veronica Nelson, and Sonya Goodwyn from his previous marriage to the late Corine Jackson Goodwyn; daughter, Kim Leysath; bonus children, Marvin McLendon and Antionette McLendon; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Malik Nelson, Myles Nelson, Gabrielle McLendon, Quinton Askew III, and Kassidy Ford; goddaughter, Leslie Palmer; siblings, Ellen Goodwyn Crawford, Eva Mullens, Sandra McKnight, and Lillian Goodwyn; in-laws, Betty Picott (Ernest), Helen Woodland, Jessie Hatchell, Curtis Woodland, Joan Thompson (Reggie), Joanne Scott, and Alice Goodwyn; special buddy, Chase, his shih-poo, who followed Alvin everywhere he went - “his protector”; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
