Sybil Dorothea Shereaves Obituary

Sybil Dorothea Shereaves, affectionately known as Brownie, Ma’Dor, and Nana, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024, at the age of 95 at Ludlowe Center for Health & Rehabilitation in Fairfield, CT. Born on October 5, 1929, in Graves End, Trelawny, Jamaica, Sybil lived a vibrant and fulfilling life, touching the hearts of many along the way.

Sybil was the beloved daughter of Marilyn Theresa (Miller) Archer and Sydney Shereaves. She grew up in a large family, with two brothers, Dr. Douglas Kentish Archer and Maxwell Archer, and a sister, Mrs. Lena Duncan on her mother’s side, as well as numerous siblings on her father’s side. Raised in Graves End, she later moved to Glendevon and Green Pond in Montego Bay. In the 1970s, Sybil migrated to the United States, settling first in Washington, D.C., where she obtained her nursing assistant certificate. In the 1990s, she moved to Bridgeport, CT, where she would reside for the rest of her life.

Known for her friendly, sassy personality, Sybil was the life of the party, a true firecracker who brought joy to those around her. She was opinionated and strong-willed, always ready to share her thoughts. A devoted member of the Adventist faith, she engaged in church outreach and completed a training course in Lay Evangelism through the Allegheny East Conference of Seventh Day Adventists. Sybil had a passion for shopping, was a sentimental card giver, and enjoyed singing, often using her gifts to minister to others.

Sybil is survived by her four children: Paulet McDonald, Doreen Ferreira, Robert Chambers, and Moveta Chambers, as well as her son-in-law, Delroy Salmon. She leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Phillip Butler, Michelle Chambers, Andre Ferreira, Rhon Salmon,Chaiyanne Salmon, and David Parkes, along with their spouses and eight great-grandchildren: Jasmine, Justine, Elijah, Rhon Jr., Olivya, Nevaya, Jayvion, and Ebba who brought her immense joy.

She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Lena Duncan; eight brothers and three sisters on her father’s side; numerous nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom will carry her memory forward.

Sybil was predeceased by her siblings, including Laura Shereaves, Maxwell Archer, Dr. Douglas Kentish Archer, and Mrs. Reggie Haynes, as well as her grandson, Mario Ferreira.
