Gansevoort, NY
Frederick E. Farrell, a resident of Gansevoort, New York, passed away on September 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on July 26th, 1941, in Syracuse, NY, to Paul and Kathryn Farrell. Growing up in the quaint town of Kane, PA, Fred served as an altar boy at St. Callistus Roman Catholic Church and honed his skills on the basketball court as a proud member of the Kane Wolves, graduating in 1959. It was during these formative years that he met his beloved wife Sally, with whom he recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.
Following four years of dedicated service in the Air Force, Frederick returned to Bradford, NY, in 1964, embarking on a fulfilling career with Kendall Refining Company. Initially working in the oil fields, Fred later transitioned to Kendall's Tires, Batteries & Accessories division. His commitment and talent propelled him to the role of district manager for Kendall Motor Oil in Syracuse, NY, where he continued to excel professionally.
In 1977, an exciting new chapter unfolded as Fred seized a promising business opportunity and relocated his family to Saratoga Springs. There, he acquired a small local oil business from Bob Stevens, recognizing the immense potential within the region. With relentless dedication and the support of his family, Farrell Oil Company flourished, expanding its footprint across the Capital region and Upstate New York over 37 fruitful years. In the beginning, the company specialized in a comprehensive range of automotive products, primarily motor oils and the Korkay brand of cleaning products, became a trusted staple within the local community.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Fred was an avid golfer and an enthusiastic advocate of the local racing scene. Farrell Oil proudly sponsored Albany-Saratoga, Fonda, and Lebanon Valley Speedways, with Fred, and later his son Chris, relishing their time at the track on sponsorship nights. Additionally, Farrell Oil extended a helping hand to numerous drivers, forming lasting bonds within the racing community. Among them, Jack Cottrell of Rock City Falls held a special place in Fred's heart, not only as a favorite driver but also as a cherished friend.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife Sally, their sons Brian of Bozeman, MT, and Chris (Lesa) of Greenfield, NY, as well as his adoring grandchildren Logen Fisher (Griffin), Keegen Farrell, Adysen Farrell, and Colten Farrell. He is also survived by his sister Mary Farrell of Ballston Spa and his brothers Mike (Mary) Farrell of Ohio and Paul (Dorothy) Farrell of California.
In accordance with Frederick's wishes, no public memorial service will be held. The family will gather privately to celebrate the life of this wonderful man. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring his memory with a charitable donation to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MichaelJFox.org).
Fred valued the relationships he forged over the years and cherished every opportunity to share a story or enjoy a hearty laugh. To honor his memory and celebrate his remarkable life, we invite you to embrace joy, laughter, and the company of loved ones, just as Frederick did throughout his lifetime.
