Elizabeth A. “Liz” Clemmons, was a thoughtful, warm and selfless woman remembered by her infectious laugh and smile. In the presence of her close family, Liz passed on September 16, 2024 after a courageous 9-year battle with breast cancer. Liz's profound legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know her.
Born on March 1, 1960, in Chicago, Liz's journey began as a story waiting to be told. She was the cherished eldest daughter of John and Diane Mallon, and the proud mother of two wonderful children, Zack and Zoe Clemmons. She is also survived by her three supportive sisters Jacqueline (Gary) Lynn, Laura (Oscar) Godinez, and Michelle Mallon Jenkins. Liz's nieces, nephews, friends, and coworkers also held a special place in her life.
Liz pursued her passion for words and storytelling at Northern Illinois University, where she studied journalism. She later earned a master's degree in Library & Information Science from Dominican University.
As the Director of Communications and Visual Arts at Gail Borden Public Library for 18 years, Liz created exhibits and wrote pieces that captured imagination and history for thousands of people. Her voice resonated with readers across the region during her tenure as a columnist at the Northwest Herald and as a reporter at the Daily Herald. She also built strong bonds in her role as an editor at Arthur Andersen & Co. Beyond her professional endeavors, Liz's commitment to her community shone brightly as she volunteered her time and talents at the Cary-Grove Historical Society and Project Timbertown.
Liz was a voracious reader and devoted member of her book club for over two decades where she forged lifelong friendships. She had spirited support for the Chicago Bulls and loved exploring museums, watching classic movies, and savoring a good cocktail or glass of wine while surrounded by family and friends.
Elizabeth A. Clemmons, a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend, will forever be remembered as a guiding light—a light that will never fade.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N Grove Ave, Elgin, IL 60120. Attendees are encouraged to wear purple and make donations in Liz’s honor to the Gail Borden Public Library Foundation.
