Donald Lloyd Anderson Obituary

Smithfield – Donald L. Anderson, Sr., 93, died on September 16, 2024. A native of Newport News, VA, he was the son of the late Susan C. Little Anderson and late Melvin Leigh Anderson. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan G. Anderson; a son, Donald L. Anderson, Jr.; and a son-in-law, George R. Harris; and two brothers, Melvin and Robert, and a sister, Arnice. Mr. Anderson was an active life-long member of the former West End United Methodist Church where he served on many of the boards and committees, sang in the Chancel Choir and played in the Handbell Chorus, was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class, United Methodist Men and served as Treasurer. He served on the Board of Directors for the Wesley Center.


Mr. Anderson was an avid fisherman and was a member of the Portsmouth Anglers Club. He also loved to sing and performed with the Dick Barnes Chorale, a barbershop quartet (Brothers in Christ) and performed in local nursing homes with the Joyful Sounds group.


He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served for 20 years with various army bands at Fort Lee, VA, Heidelberg and Frankfurt, Germany and Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. He played trumpet and French horn and wrote the programs for marches and served as the drum major of the marching bands He also worked for the United States Post Office and retired after 20 years. In his retirement, he took up painting in water colors and oils.


Survivors include two daughters, Donna Harris and Susan Kemp and husband Whalen of Shacklefords, VA, a daughter-in-law, Cindy Anderson, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.


A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel on Friday, September 20, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
