Cumberland, MD-Judith “Judy” Ann (Menges) Appel, of Cumberland, MD, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2024 at her home with her family by her side.
Born May 21, 1943, in Cumberland, MD, Mrs. Appel was the daughter of the late Devon “Doady” Roy Menges and Georgia Naomi (Boyd) Menges. She was also preceded in death by her brother-in-law: John “Jack” Cheney, Jr; as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Judy was a graduate of Fort Hill High School Class of 1961 and also the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1963. She retired from Memorial Hospital with 41 years of service where she worked as a registered nurse on pediatrics for the majority of those years. She was voted as #1 Nurse of the Year by the State of Maryland two times. She was a life member of New Covenant Methodist Church where she was instrumental in the expansion of the Youth Involvement Program and was very active in all youth activities and programs within the church. She was an organizer of the group “Warrior Chicks” for the Relay for Life walk and a raised large amount of contributions for the American Cancer Society.
She took great pride in her yard and her flowers, taking the time for perfection of potting, placing, and decorating.
Judy had great faithfulness to her church and church family and she treated her niece and nephew and their families as her own. She was so caring and loving to everyone. She was always smiling and happy even though she was in pain. Heaven sure has gained another sweet soul. She is now rejoicing with the Lord.
Judy is survived by her husband of 23 years, John Appel; her sister: Starr (Menges) Cheney Giles and husband Gary; a nephew: Dr. Jason Cheney and wife Christine; and a niece: Jantia Barnhart and husband Chris; her great-nieces and nephew: Carinne Cheney, Jacob Cheney, and Chayney Barnhart; her step-son: Todd Wayne Appel; her step-daughter: Nicholle Appel; her step-grandsons: Hayden and Grayson Yates; her step-great granddaughter: Maisy Yates; her sister-in-law: Patty Maddy; and her brother-in-law: Leo Appel; as well as numerous cousins.
Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD (www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Friday, September 20, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
A funeral service will be held at New Covenant Methodist Church, 1709 Frederick Street, Cumberland, MD on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Richard Jewell officiating. Friends will also be received at the church on hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
