In Loving Memory of Charles Pickard
1926-2024
It is with great sadness and heavy heart to announce the passing of our dad Charles Pickard on August 17, 2024 at the age of 98.
Dad was born July 9, 1926 in Invermere, BC, he was the oldest son of three boys. At a young age dad and his brothers moved to Kamloops, BC with their mother. In 1940 dad went out to work in order to help his mom and two brothers. His first job was at the John Carlson ranch and the beginning of his ranching career, he worked there until the fall of 1943. A year later dad joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment and was deployed by sea to England. He spent his war years in Holland, Belgium and Italy. When the war was over dad came home and went back to work at the Carlson Ranch.
Dad and Mom were married March 8, 1947 and moved to Enderby where dad went logging. Dad and Mom were married for 71 years at the time of mom's passing in 2018. They had three daughters Jean (Rick) Blanchard, Ida (Allan) Penttila and Barbara Goldade, we were "Charlies Angels"
according to Mom. They also had 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.
Dad spent most of his years ranching, In the early fifties he went back to the Carlson Ranch which was then Buckerfields and Green Acres. We moved from the ranch to Shuswap and dad went logging for George Aulin at Seymour Arm until 1962 when they moved to Pritchard and he went to work for Les Turcotte at South Gate Park. At this time they looked after the park and had the riding stables.
Over the years dad ranched and cowboy-ed in the Chilicotin, Cherry Creek and the Perry Ranch in Cache Creek just to name a few of the places. He loved to saddle up his horse and ride out to check the cows and calves which he knew every cow and calf out in that field. Eventually they moved back to Pritchard as that was always home to them.
Dad was our "Book of Knowledge" he had the most amazing memory and if you ever needed to know any history of the area or a persons name or who they married or whatever, he knew it. He could remember places he had been and he would tell you how long it took to get there and what rivers you crossed and almost down to how many hills or corners there were in the road. The amazing thing was that he had that great memory right up to his last days.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers Alf and Cliff, his wife Rose and son-in-law Raymond Goldade.
We would like to extend our thanks to Doctor Robinson, all of our home support ladies that were here for dad and the Kamloops Hospice nurses and staff that took good care of dad in his last few weeks.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, in lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Kamloops Hospice in memory of Dad.
