Imogene Rawlings was born on March 20, 1950, to Melvin Walker and Minnie Walker in Parents, a sister Mamie McClinton, brothers W.C. and Robert Les. She accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Galilee M.B. Church.
Imogene attended Ruleville Central High School in Ruleville, MS. After high school she attended Alcorn State University where she studied to be an educator. She later moved to Memphis, TN where she met the love of her life, Richard Eugene Rawlings. They married in December 1970. The Lord blessed this union with three beautiful children, Camille Gabrielle, Richard Jason and Heather Joy. She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother, who poured herself into her family.
Imogene, affectionately known as Jean, held a love of the arts and literature. She had a lifelong career as a dedicated music and religion teacher at schools across the city, including Word of Faith Christian Academy and Mississippi Boulevard Christian Academy. She was a published author, film producer and entrepreneur. Her commitment to cultivating young minds led her to find the Fannie Lou Hamer Cultural and Learning Program in her hometown of Ruleville, MS.
Additionally, she held a passion for travel, having visited such destinations as Paris, Jerusalem, Israel, Barcelona and many parts of the United States.
To know Jean was to know her love of the Lord. After precious time spent together a scripture was often included in her parting words. Her most common form of praise was leading young people in worship. She has been known to share that her calling from God is "anointed praise from children", and one of her favorite scriptures was Psalm 8:2 "From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise."
On Monday, September 16, 2024, she took leave of her earthly body and transitioned into the presence of the Lord. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy her loving husband of 53 years, Richard; three children Camille Rawlings, Jason (Lesley) Rawlings, and Joy Rawlings; six grandchildren Tyler Rawlings, Jada Rawlings, Cameron Rawlings, Cristian Nelson, Chanler Nelson and Wiley Rawlings; her brother Melvin Walker of Ruleville, MS; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
