Shirley Joyce Charles, 89, of Greenville, MO, passed away September 12, 2024, at her residence. She was born in Lost Creek, Wayne County, MO, July 31, 1935, to parents Elmer and Myrtle (Underwood) Barks.
Shirley was a loving sister, aunt, and friend. She married Jasper Charles on November 19, 1955. Shirley enjoyed hunting, fishing, being out in nature, spending time in the woods, quilting, cooking, and listening to gospel music. Shirley was strong-willed, had a sense of humor, and loved to tell stories. She enjoyed raising pigs, cows, and chickens, and could repair just about anything. Shirley kept a beautiful garden and canned the vegetables she grew each year for her extended family. She was passionate about the care and upkeep of Crossroads Cemetery. Most importantly, Shirley lovingly cared for her husband, Jasper, for over twelve years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She was a friend to all.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-three years; brothers: Ralph and Melvin Barks; sisters: Beulah Noldge, Thelma Haynes.
Shirley is survived by her sister: Faye Stevenson of Florissant; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends. Shirley will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation was held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Ruegg Funeral Home, Greenville Chapel. Funeral service followed at 12:00 noon, also in the Greenville Chapel. Pastor Richard Sanders ministered to the family. Mark Parker, Lou McLean, Ryan Barks, Don Duckett, David Davis, and Alex Ruegg served as pallbearers. Burial was in Crossroads Cemetery, Greenville.
