Charles Leland Miller, 88, of Tupelo, Mississippi, formerly of Amarillo, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024. Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Brooks Chapel with Brian Mashburn, minister of Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo, officiating. Burial will follow in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M.
Charles was born on December 30, 1935 in Hale Center to James and Lela (Rampy) Miller. He was a 1954 graduate of Canyon High School where he played on the tennis team. He received his Bachelor of Education from Texas Tech University and his Master of Education from West Texas State University. While at WTSU, he was a member of the tennis team and he also met his future wife, Bobbie Posey. They were married on June 12, 1964 in Rotan, TX and celebrated 47 wonderful years together before her passing on April 10, 2011.
Charles taught Math at Travis Jr. High in Amarillo for 31 years and painted houses on the side with Cal Morgan, Tom Monroe, and Charles Richie. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a longtime, faithful member of Southwest Church of Christ.
Charles enjoyed being a ham radio operator, using the call sign W5YFT. He was a master puzzler and built the family’s first TV. He also built a 1954 MG in 1978. Charles continued to play tennis and after retirement, he devoted himself to golf and traveling with Bobbie. When she became ill, he dedicated himself to her constant care, and after her passing, he began singing in retirement homes with the Joy Singers to bring a touch of happiness to the residents there.
One of Charles’s greatest loves was his grandchildren. They have fond memories of him playing basketball and ping pong with them and reminding them to ‘keep your eye on the ball.’ He would often ask them “What is the longest side of a right triangle?” which was of course ‘the hypotenuse!’ He treasured his time with his family and they will greatly miss him.
Charles was also preceded in death by his parents and older brother, James Miller.
Survivors include his son, Tom Miller and wife, Deanna of Tupelo, MS; his daughter, Merry Kay Brewer and husband, Mike of Piedmont, OK; three grandchildren, Tyler Holloway Brewer and fiancé, Elizabeth Skelton, Parker Samuel Brewer, and Jordyn Grace Brewer, all of Piedmont, OK; his younger brother, Ralph Miller of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
