Peter Mendelson

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of Peter Mendelson on September 12, 2024, in Bozeman, Montana. He was the loving and devoted husband of Lynn (Schwartz) Mendelson for 55 years, outstanding father of Michele (Ron) Berman, Robin (Tom) Kourakis, and Adam (Aida) Mendelson; wonderful grandfather to Andie, Zoe, Jonah, Rhys, Sequoia, Cassidy and Charlie; beloved son of the late Mildred Spero Mendelson and Nelson Mendelson; dear brother of the late Roberta “Bobbi” Grinstein. Peter also leaves dear family members including his brothers-in-law Richard Schwartz (the late Diane Schwartz) and Pete Grinstein; his niece Wendy (Thomas) Persson; nephew Jeffrey (Debbie) Grinstein and their children. Gratitude to Chris, Alex and Heidi for their decade of OT, PT, friendship, love, and support to Pete.

Peter was born in Youngstown, Ohio and graduated from Liberty High School. Peter then went on to study economics and finance at the University of Wisconsin where Peter made lifelong friends. After graduation Peter went on to Officers Candidate School and spent 3 years in the Navy. He was commissioned to serve as a dispensing officer at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Peter returned to Youngstown to begin his career at the company, Penn-Ohio Towel, started by his grandfather Harry Spero. Over the next several decades Peter took over the management, growth, and evolution of what was to become a generational family business.

Peter married the love of his life and devoted companion, Lynn, in 1969. Peter was a wonderful father who supported and nurtured his children and grandchildren without fail. Peter made enduring friendships throughout his life and cherished those relationships. He went on many intrepid adventures with Lynn and close friends, exploring East and South Africa, Nepal, Vietnam, and many other wonderful vacations around the world.

Pete’s second love was fishing. He pursued his passion with gusto, having the opportunity to fish the waters ranging from the Canadian Northern territory to the Great Barrier Reef. Just outside his Naples Florida home, Pete took his “gheenoe” out daily, navigating the mangroves in pursuit of baby tarpon and snook. But his favorite fishing was stalking bonefish by foot around the flats of Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Outdoor life brought Peter and Lynn to summers in Montana in the 1990s where he enjoyed fishing, hiking, golf, tennis, and road trips through the National Parks. Over the past decade, Peter often flyfished the Yellowstone River and Ennis Lake with his beloved service dog Debbie, surrounded by people he loved.

Pete will always be remembered as having unwavering conviction, a tireless work ethic, and a deep love and commitment to his family. He will be missed terribly by those that knew him and loved him.

A celebration honoring Peter’s life will be held in Naples, Florida at a later date.
