Eugene Raymond Karmazyn, 88, of Hopewell Township, PA, passed into eternal life at his residence on Thursday September 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born May 31, 1936, in Aliquippa PA, he was the son of the late Anthony and Cornelia Karmazyn. He married Jean Anne (Flynn) Karmazyn on June 30, 1962, and they were happily married for 62 years.
Gene was a 1954 graduate of Aliquippa High School. He attended Slippery Rock University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in education. He also attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he subsequently received his master’s degree. Upon graduation, he taught theater and television production at Aliquippa High School for 38 years. As the audio-visual coordinator for the school system, he was responsible for taping all basketball and football games as well as school functions. He loved taking his plays to scholastic competitions, where many of his plays won production awards for his students. He was a beloved, admired and respected teacher and a huge influence on many students. In addition to his passion for theater, he also had a love of sports. While attending college, he was a member of the cross-country, swim and football teams. He was a member of the St. Francis Cabrini parish softball team where he was considered an ‘ace on the mound.’ Later in life, he became an avid fencer.
He was a proud, active member of the Ukrainian National Association where he served as recording secretary. He also was a member of the Ukrainian Technological Society. He was a lifelong member of the Beaver County Teachers Association, PSEA, and NEA. Eugene was an active member of SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Aliquippa. He was often called upon and enjoyed volunteering his services. In his retirement, Gene was an amazing gardener and his grandchildren’s biggest sports and theater fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael Anthony Karmazyn.
He is survived by his wife, Jean (Flynn) Karmazyn, three daughters, Christine Gowen (Joseph) of Tampa, Florida, Lisa Baker (Michael) of Moon Township, and Donna Galusha (Todd) of Hopewell Township as well as daughter-in-law Kristin Karmazyn of Centennial, CO. He was the very proud grandfather of nine grandchildren (Kayla, Anthony, Shay, Jacob, Madison, Leah, Maya, Grace, Olivia) and one great-grandchild (Adonis). He is also survived by his sister, Olga Karmazyn, and his brother, Donald Karmazyn (Mary Ann) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Monday, September 16, 2024, from 3 to 7 pm at TATALOVICH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 2205 McMinn St., Aliquippa, PA 15001 (additional parking in rear). Parastas (blessing service) will take place Monday at 4 pm in the funeral home.
Funeral services will begin on Tuesday, September 17,2024, at 1 pm at TATALOVICH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., Aliquippa, followed by Divine Liturgy at 1:30 pm at SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 2001 Main St., Aliquippa, PA 15001, with Fr. Michael Polosky, officiating.
Interment will follow at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Economy, PA.
