Virginia "Ginny" Oldenburg Obituary

MADISON - Virginia “Ginny” (Holmes) Oldenburg, age 88, of Madison, passed away on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024.  She was born on May 22, 1936, in Ewen, Mich., the daughter of Warren and Margaret (Schumacher) Holmes.  She graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1954 and moved to Madison to work as a stenographer at the Dane County Department of Social Services.  Ginny met the love of her life, Norbert Oldenburg, through mutual friends, and they married on Sept. 29, 1956, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Mount Horeb, Wis.

After her five children were in school, Ginny worked at Prange Way on North Sherman Avenue for 20 years, starting as a cashier and eventually as customer service manager.  She then worked at the Credit Bureau of Madison as a receptionist for six years prior to retirement in 2002.

Ginny loved to dance with her husband, Norb.  She also enjoyed playing cards with their many friends.  Ginny loved to travel and enjoyed camping, flower gardening, sewing, knitting, and crocheting.  Ginny’s playful sense of humor, easy laughter, and joy drew people to her.  Nothing made Ginny happier than gathering for holidays and other special occasions with friends and family.  There was always time to sit and talk and there was always room for one more seat at the dinner table.  Years later neighbors, co-workers, and more recently medical staff commented on how special Ginny was to them.

Ginny is survived by her sons, Joseph (Brenda) Oldenburg, Steven (Julie) Oldenburg, Charles (Tracy) Oldenburg and David (Laura) Oldenburg; daughter, Jennifer (Thomas) Sheahan; grandchildren, Diana Shegonee, Ryan Oldenburg, Marcus (Lauren) Oldenburg, James Oldenburg, Grace Oldenburg, Faith Oldenburg, Curtis Sheahan, Spencer Sheahan and Jacob Sheahan; great-grandchildren, Otto Oldenburg and Nova Oldenburg; sister-in-law, Margaret Holmes; and brother-in-law, Tom Devine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert Oldenburg; her parents; brothers, Dave and Bill (Betty) Holmes; and sisters, Carol (Glenn) Sutter, Dolores (Ray) Sutter and Diane Devine.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024.
