Mr. John Garrett peacefully departed this earthly life, on Monday,
September 9, 2024. He was born on July 24, 1928, the second child
to Qualia and Macy Walker Garrett in Wake County, NC. He was
educated in the Wake and Durham County School Systems. Only
weeks after graduating from Merrick Moore High School, he joined
the United States Army (Airborne division, serving as a paratrooper)
- a heroic and historic accomplishment as a black man in that era.
In his early years, John was a member of New Light Baptist Church
in Creedmoor, NC. He later joined St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in
Durham, NC.
John married Daisy Turrentine, and to this union, one child was
born, Shirley Garrett Parker and one grandson, Ralph Parker Jr. He
was preceded in death by his wife Daisy and daughter Shirley.
John was blessed later in life in his marriage to Maudie Lee Mae
Fuller Dove. His life was renewed with love and hope. This beautiful
union blessed him with a loving and supportive bonus family who
would forever affectionally call him John/dad/grandpa. Sadly, his
lovely Maudie, passed on.
After many years, he joined in a special friendship with Geneva
Quick Mangum. Also known as "Sweet Pea". They experienced a
journey of mutual love and joy until her passing.
However, he never forgot Maudie and the family he was blessed to
have with her. A family who loved him then and have always loved
him until the end. We all thank God for this beautiful extended
family.
He was a very proud United States military veteran. A long-distance
truck driver and a loved employee at Duke University Chapel.
He worked at Duke University in the Housekeeping Department for
several years. and he was a daily staple at Duke Chapel. Everyone
loved him. He was truly liked, and over the years, he was given the
nickname *CHAPEL*.
John enjoyed simple pleasures in life that included gardening, family
gatherings, a good joke, scratch off lottery tickets and a good piece
of cake. He was a loving, down to earth, comedic realist. Could
always make you laugh when he shared funny stories of his life and
his siblings. What you saw, was what you got, and, what you got
was real, honest and authentic love. A funny, blunt and memorable
character. A beautiful soul who loved and was loved.
John was a phenomenal husband, father, grandfather, stepfather,
brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and, friend. John was
preceded in death by his parents Qualia and Macy Garrett, wife
Daisy Garrett, daughter Shirley Garrett Parker, wife Maudie Lee
Mae Fuller Dove Garrett, special friend Geneva Quick Mangum; two
brothers and four sisters: Freeman Garrett, Thomas Garrett, Lillie
Garrett Edwards, Elnora Garrett Mangum, Catherine Garrett
Mangum, and Nettie Garrett Cozart.
From his union with beautiful Maudie, John leaves to cherish his
memory - two stepdaughters - Loretta D. Woods (Burlington) and
Audry D. Snipes (Ken) (Durham); two stepsons - Larry Dove (Mary
(deceased) (Saxapahaw) and Nathaniel Dove (Durham). Preceding him
in death stepsons - Alexander Dove (Carolyn) (Mebane), Rev.
Johnny R. Dove (Nancy) (Burlington) and Daniel Dove (Leona)
(Saxapahaw), stepdaughter - Irene Finger (Asheboro); 25
grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 29 great-great grandchildren.
His Garrett family will forever cherish the memories of their Uncle
John. He had 10 nieces and 8 nephews: Evon, Frances, Michael, Beverly,
Laverne, Luther, Titus, Mary and Matthew; Janet,
Sharon and Felicia; Emmett, Stephanie (deceased), and Karen;
Ronnie, Annette and Timothy; Reggie, Cynthia and Tiffany.
He was deeply loved by all his family, many relatives and friends.
He will be missed but always remembered with the upmost
respect and sincere love.
Rest in sweet peace, John Garrett.
