William James Long Obituary

William "Bill" James Long, 88, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024.


Bill was born Monday, November 18, 1935 to the late James and Laura (Fike) Long and lived in the Norton area most of his life. He was a member of Teamsters Local 24 and drove truck for Lyons Transportation Lines, was a three time National Champion for the Truck Roadeo Competitions, and in 1989 was selected by The American Trucking Association as a Captain for their America's Road Team to promote the trucking industry. After retirement he was known as Bus Driver Bill for Norton City Schools. Bill loved driving and was instrumental in teaching other bus drivers' skills to compete in the School Bus Roadeos.


Family meant everything to Bill and spending time with family was his greatest joy. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Mary Karen Long; daughter, Debra (Brent) Bauer; grandchildren, Sara (Steven) Wanek, Ryan Bauer; great-grandchildren, Allison Wanek, Lauren Wanek; and many other loving family and friends.


Visitation will be Sunday, September 8, 2024, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Bacher-Moore Funeral Home (Norton), 3250 Greenwich Road, Norton, Ohio 44203. Funeral Service will be 11:00 am, Monday, September 9, 2024 at the funeral home. Bill's final resting place will be Greenlawn Memorial Park.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bill's name to The Salvation Army, 560 W Wooster Rd, Barberton, OH 44203.
