It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Richard “Rick” Copley on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, who died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 76 years.

Rick was born on June 14, 1948, in Winnipeg, MB; the family then moved to Calgary in the mid-1950s. Rick was predeceased by his father William “Bill” Copley, mother Audrey (nee Doersam), and older sister Carolyn Wylie. He is survived by his nephews, Scott (Linda) Wylie and Michael Wylie; and grandnephew Thomas.

Rick’s fascination with film led him to study at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, where he earned a diploma in Film and Video Production. He loved working in this field and became friends with the many colleagues he met along the way. His colorful career included many unique experiences, including accompanying the pandas from China to Calgary for the 1988 Winter Olympics, just as one example. Rick especially enjoyed covering the Stampeders and Flames games, as well as all things rodeo.

He will be greatly missed by his extended family and friends, including cousin Ron Doersam and lifelong friend Russ Gerrish.

A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Heritage, 1708, 16th Avenue N, across from the North Hill Shopping Centre, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
