Angela Caroline Josephine Matchim (née Brown) passed away the morning of September 3, 2024.
Angela was born in Salvage, Newfoundland on September 10, 1947, to Arthur and Norah Brown. As a child, she hula-hooped around Salvage with her best friend Anita Hunter (Chipman), who accompanied her to Happy Adventure to finish her grade 11. The following summer she went to teaching school, and then back to Salvage for a year of teaching at the St. Stephen’s School. On April 9, 1966, she married the love of her life, James (Jim) Matchim of Sandy Cove. Jim and Angela started dating at 16 and had a love story that spanned 60 years. They were known for being inseparable and taking care of each other - where he went, she went, without fail. Within a year of marriage, they welcomed their first daughter, Heather (Seale), followed by Wendy (Eeles) in 1970, and Jimmy (Jim Jr.) in 1972. Their home was always open, whether for a cup of tea or an extended stay. They were also steadfast in visiting others and have friends all over Canada and the United States as a result.
Jim and Angela worked at everything together, from owning a wholesale and grocery business, Seaside Meats, and a fishing company, Crimson Tide Fisheries, to helping Jim Jr with the running the Sand Lake Hunting Lodge. In 1990, they retired and Angela became Jim's co-pilot. They spent their time flying airplanes and helicopters, wintering in Florida, boating in the Bahamas, and spending plenty of time visiting their children and grandchildren in Newfoundland, Alberta, and British Columbia.
Angela was a devoted mother who balanced motherhood with Jim’s entrepreneurial escapades, and part-time summers at Terra Nova National Park. She was dedicated to raising her family, except for the times we would come home for lunch and find a tin of soup and a note: “Gone to Gander!” She sewed curtains and clothes, refinished furniture, and made quilts for every child and grandchild to date. Little Nanny always took time for her grandchildren teaching them to pick berries, bake cookies, or paint rocks, and never turned down a day at the beach or going shopping for a bargain!
Angela trusted Jesus as her Saviour on March 14, 1977 and was a devoted follower of Christ until her death. She had a love for the Gospel of Christ and was a faithful member of the Gospel Hall Christian Assembly on the Eastport Peninsula; her service to the people in the assemblies will be greatly missed. Angela was well known for her gift of hospitality and literally welcomed thousands of people to her table. Whether planned or not, no matter who came to the door, she fed them - no one ever left hungry.
Angela's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of her loved ones, but her memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration. She has left a legacy of love, hospitality, and unwavering devotion to God and family, which will continue to live on in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Angela leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Jim; her three children, Heather (Geoff) Seale, Wendy (David) Eeles, and Jim Matchim; ten grandchildren, Andrew and Chase (Melissa) Seale; Jordan (Robyn), Matthew (Kristin), Simone, Lachlan, and Grace Eeles; Cole, Stephen, and Emma Matchim; and one great-granddaughter, Ariadne Eeles. She is predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Norah Brown but is survived by her sisters Eileen Squire and Edna (Rod) Ackerman, as well as numerous extended family members, friends, and her beloved dog, Skipper.
Though our hearts are broken, we know that we will see her again, because she is with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
"Let not your hearts be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." John 14:1-3
