Richard J. “Dick” Sauerwein, 94 years old, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024, at CareOne of Holmdel, after a severe health downturn that ultimately took his life.

Dick is survived by three children, six grandchildren and one great grandson: his daughter, Kathleen Breuning and her husband James and their son Michael Breuning and his wife Bridget Brady, his son Richard T. Sauerwein and his wife Totty and their children, Lindsey and her husband Jose Perez and their child Leo Alexander and Andrew Sauerwein and his wife Michelle and his daughter Joan Randazzo and her husband Edward and their children, John and his wife Katie and twins Mary and her husband Shane and Thomas.
Dick was born in Elizabeth on October 29, 1929 and grew up in Roselle. He graduated from Abraham Clark High School in Roselle in 1947 and Seton Hall University in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in social studies. Dick enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years guarding Elmendorf Air Force Base outside of Anchorage, Alaska, having attained the rank of Sergeant.
After discharge in 1954, he graduated from Seton Hall University Law School, evening division. After being admitted to the NJ Bar Association, he served several years as a Deputy Attorney General in Trenton, assigned to representing the Division of Clean Air and Water. He handled the case which sustained the Constitutionality of the NJ Air Pollution control code.
Upon returning to private practice, he mainly concentrated on civil litigation matters, the defense side, including medical and legal malpractice. After 40 years of practice, in 1993 he retired as Managing Litigation Attorney, with CNA Insurance Company, Florham Park branch.
Dick was an outgoing friendly man and an upstanding citizen. He was well-liked by all those who knew him. He was a 50-year loyal member of the former Roselle Golf Club and loved the weekly golf matches with his buddies. As an attorney, Dick earned a reputation as a strong minded, fiercely competitive and tough negotiator, which among his colleagues earned him the nickname “not a dime Sauerwein”.
