Emily passed away peacefully on August 29, 2024, in Bend, Oregon at the age of 89 with her daughter by her side.
Emily was born and raised in Long Island, New York. She attended Lawrence High School where she was a baton twirler, violinist, and voted “Wittiest”. After High School, she considered becoming a nun. However, she eventually followed a different calling, to be a wife and mother. She married Eugene Von Oder in 1959, and they had 2 children, Kevin and Kathleen.
Emily made a beautiful home for her family in Solana Beach, California. She loved to decorate for the holidays and have family dinners. She worked in education or healthcare while raising her children. In her 40’s she divorced, and as an empty-nester followed her next calling. She earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from San Diego State University at the age of 50. Emily worked in Adoptions for Child Protective Services until she retired. She loved her work and changed the lives of countless children and families for the better. Emily said she was “born a social worker!”
Emily’s focus was always on family, and this included numerous dogs. She doted on her fur-babies, and everyone else’s too! Later in life, the only item in her Walker was a bag of dog treats for those she met on her daily 1–2-mile walks.
Emily never met a stranger, and made friends everywhere she lived; San Diego, (CA) Palm Desert (CA), Boise (ID), Sedona (AZ) and finally Bend (Oregon). Friends and family describe her as funny, beautiful, stubborn, smart, childlike, a gifted social worker, a great mentor and teacher, a caring mother, a trusted confidante, drawn to lost souls and animals, and deeply spiritual.
Emily will be interred with her father at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. She had fond memories of childhood summers in Pennsylvania with family. She was born to Joseph Louis Stile and Emily Rose (Tolan) Stile. She was raised by her father, and stepmother Leona Stile. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Kathleen (Byron) Wachtler, her brother Dr. Sabato Stile, nieces, Ranee (John), Christina (Arch), and nephew Joe (Stacey).
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Kevin.
To honor her memory, Emily would have loved donations to any Animal Humane Society.
