It is with heavy hearts that the family of Lena Pichlyk (nee Nowosad) mourns her passing on August 30, 2024 at the age of 89 years.
Known to her friends as Lee, she is lovingly remembered by her husband of 63 years, Edward; children: Noelle Lloyd (Colin Lloyd) Ronald, Michelle, and David Pichlyk; grandchildren: Thomas, James and Morgan Lloyd; nieces Donna, Deborah and Rosalind Semchuk as well as numerous relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents John and Nellie (Krisko) Nowosad, her sister Martha and Martha’s husband Emil Semchuk and her nephew Alan Semchuk.
Lena was born June 17, 1935 on a small family farm near the rural community of Grandview, Manitoba. When the family moved to the town of Grandview, Lena, her sister and parents ran a small general store serving the town and surrounding farming community.
On completion of her schooling, Lena moved to Toronto, Ontario, to work for Massey Ferguson as a secretary for a time, then moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, to work for Trans Canada Airlines as a maintenance records secretary.
It was there that she met her future husband Edward, and the two were married October 8, 1960 at St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church in Grandview.
Both deeply faithful, Lena and Edward were founding members of St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and remained dedicated parishioners until moving to Calgary, Alberta, in 1983 and joining St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church
Lena was very active in the Ukrainian Catholic Church, singing wonderfully at each Sunday Mass and joining the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada (UCWLC), serving for more than 60 years.
Through the years, Lena remained at home raising her four children and enjoyed cooking traditional Ukrainian meals, including the very best Holubtsi (cabbage rolls) and perohe (perogies) ever made.
Once the children were in school, Lena enjoyed working as a salesperson for Royal Doulton, selling fine bone china dinnerware and figurines.
As the years went on, Lena took great joy in watching her three grandchildren grow with the love and affection of a doting baba.
Lena’s steadfast devotion to her husband, children, grandchildren, friends and faith will be sorrowfully missed by all who knew her, and it is with some comfort that family and friends alike can say that:
God granted her many happy years. Многая літа
A Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church (4903 45 St SW) on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00 am
