Michael “Sean XLG” Mitchell, born on December 17, 1967, in Fayetteville, NC, passed away on August 30, 2024, at George Washington University Hospital. He was the son of the late Willie and Ethel Mitchell. Michael attended various primary schools, being an “Army Brat” and graduated high school at E.E. Smith in Fayetteville and completed higher education courses at Fayetteville University. Michael was a devoted husband of 33 years and a loving and supportive father and grandfather. He pursued a career in human services, his most recent assignment was as a Project Manager for a government contract in Washinton, DC. Michael was a talented and hardworking young man who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that persons under his supervision felt respected and supported.


Michael had several interests, but he was most known for being a song writer, performer, and author. Known as a Hip Hop Scholar, Michael “Sean XLG” Mitchell was the first rapper to win a national rap music competition. He was an artist, activist, and freelance journalist, co-authoring the USA Today article on the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop. He was the creator of Afrospirituality, a faith for individuals of African descent. An ordained minister and former deacon, he dedicated over 30 years to theological studies and is a respected figure in Spiritual Science, credited with the discovery of “Associative Consciousness.”


Michael is survived by his beloved wife Clarissa; two children Christian and Michael Jr. (Sade); four grandchildren Kylie, Carter, Ayden, and Sereniti; four brothers Jeff (Tina), Gary, Marco (Laura), Joe (Theresa); and three sisters Janet (William), Sandimaria, and Yolanda. He is also remembered by caring aunts Ruby, Valgean, Levithia, Geraldine, and Betty; uncles Charles, Bobby, Major, and Layman; mother and father-inlaw Edith and Buddy Bishop, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.


Michael's legacy of love, resilience, dedication to family, and commitment to education will forever impact those fortunate enough to have known him.


Family and friends will gather for visitation on Monday, September 16, 2024, at 10:00am, until hour of service, 11:00am, at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 7 Industrial Park Drive, Waldorf, Maryland 20602.


Interment will be held at Lincoln Memorial Gardens in Suitland, Maryland.
