George E. Murphy Obituary

George E. Murphy, 89, of Union Springs, passed away on August 30, 2024, at Auburn Community Hospital. Born in Scipio Center on February 16, 1935, George was the son of the late Louis and Celia (Golden) Murphy. He graduated from Central High in 1953 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Erie County Technical Institute. George owned Silbert Optical in Auburn for many years. He worked for Henry Renken Opticians in Syracuse. He worked for the Eye Care Center in Canandaigua. He also worked at Auburn Eye Care.

George was a fan of Notre Dame Football, Yankees Baseball, Tennis and Formula 1 racing. George was also a talented athlete. In his youth, he excelled at Softball, Tennis, Basketball and Swimming. He was a proud member of the Hibernians. George was a founding member and co-owner of the "Snake Bite Lodge" where he and his friends would often gather for cold beer, poker, hunting and fishing. They shared many adventures as a band of brothers. He was a talented storyteller where he showcased his characteristic sense of humor in all he did. Above all, George was a proud father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his family dearly and cherished the time he shared with them.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Ann Murphy; his daughters, Kelly (Tom) Smith and Kristy (Doug) Becker; his sons, Randy (Chris) Murphy and Jeffrey (Rachel) Murphy; his grandchildren, Kathleen Daily, Emily Johnson, Hannah, Patrick, Mary and Andrew Smith, Colin and Lauren Murphy, Jack and Jordan Murphy, Madison Miller and Caroline Becker. He is also survived by his 9 great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews as well as his special nephew, John Franklyn.

In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his siblings, Paul, Elizabeth, Louise, Millie, Marion, Harry, Everett and Josephine.

Calling hours for George will be held on Thursday, September 5th, from 4-7pm in White Chapel Funeral Home Inc., 197 South Street, Auburn, NY. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11:30am at St. Michael's Church, Union Springs, NY.
