Henry Philip White Obituary

Henry White

April 10, 1937- August 30, 2024

Henry Phillip White (HP) passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 30th in Townville, SC at the age of 87.

Born in Charleston, SC, on April 10, 1937, he was the son of the late James Henry White, and the late Stella Martin White.

He was preceded in death by Barbara Williams White, wife, Phillip Eugene White, son and Kendra Hamilton, granddaughter.

He is survived by his five children Mary Ellen Soesbee (John), Henry Bruce White, Keith Russel White, James Luckey White (Treasa), and Stacy Aileen Hall (Collin); his six grandchildren Christopher Harman, Jaime Harman, Amanda Pennington (Jason), Rebecca Ward (Chad), James white, and Jacob Hall; his six great-grandchildren Jaiden, Austin, Adeline, Jasmine, Lee, and Jimmy; his one great-great-grandchild Augustine; and extended family and friends.

Henry’s life in Awendaw, Mt. Pleasant, and Shem Creek, South Carolina, was deeply intertwined with the water. Growing up in these coastal towns, he spent more time navigating the waterways than on solid ground. His experiences ranged from fishing, shrimping, crabbing, and helping his dad charter their shrimp boat to working as a deckhand on a tugboat. The water was not just a backdrop but a central element of his adventures and livelihood.

Henry served as an Army reservist until 1962. During his military service, he was a Merchant Mariner Certified deckhand on tugboats for Marine Contracting and Towing Company in Charleston Harbor for more then 30 years, he retired in 1987. His long career on the water reflects a deep commitment to maritime work, as well as building on his early experiences and lifelong connection to the sea.

A memorial service will be announced for his ashes to be intermitted for a later date at Sandridge First Baptist Church, 4677 State Rd. Ridgeville, SC 29472.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Agape Care, 145 Thomas Green Blvd, Suite 209, Clemson, SC, 29631.
