Salem, CT—James Kenneth Whittaker, age 59, of Salem, CT, passed away on August 30, 2024.


He is survived by his loving mother, Mady Gibbs of Montville, CT; his devoted sister and brother, Renee Mattison of Mystic, CT, and Michael Whittaker of Montville, CT; his cherished children, Evan Whittaker of Beijing, China, Avery Sherer of Simsbury, CT, Lillian Whittaker of New York City, NY, Samuel Whittaker of Salem, CT, and John Whittaker of Salem, CT; and his adored granddaughter, Jude Sherer of Simsbury, CT. He is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and his wife, Sharon Whittaker. He was predeceased by his father, Kenneth Whittaker, and his grandparents, Mari and Jimmy Sigros, and Bruce and Lillian Whittaker.


James was born in Montville, Connecticut on January 28, 1965. From a young age, James exhibited a strong work ethic. He took over the family business from his grandfather, Jimmy Sigros, operating concessions on the Cross Sound Ferries. After many successful years in the family business, James transitioned into the construction industry.


On November 29, 2015, James was ordained as a Deacon in the Greek Orthodox Church at Saint Sophia Church in New London, CT. He later went on to serve the parish of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield, MA. James was a dedicated servant to his community, offering spiritual guidance and emotional support to those in need.


James found enjoyment in many activities including snowmobiling, running and hiking.


James was a devoted father; the greatest joy in his life was spending time with his family. He will be most remembered for the profound love he had for them.


Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 11:00 am with services beginning at 11:00 am at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield, MA, followed by a private burial at Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London, CT. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
