Funeral services for Donald Ray McFarland, 79, will be held on Friday September 6 at 10:00
A.M. at Quail Springs Baptist Church,14613 N. May Ave in Oklahoma City. Don departed this
life on August 30,2024 in his home surrounded by his family. After the service he will be laid to
rest at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery; viewing will be held on September 5 from 5:00 P.M.
until 7:00 P.M. at Vondel L. Smith Mortuary North, 13125 N. MacArthur Blvd. in Oklahoma City.
Don was born on September 17, 1944, in Lawton, Oklahoma to Robert Lee McFarland and
Lillian Margarette (Mask) McFarland and lived his early years in Snyder, Oklahoma. The family
moved to Lawton while Don was in his elementary school years he later graduated from Lawton
High School in 1962. In 1966, he graduated from Cameron College. He earned a BA in Speech
& Drama from Southwestern State College, Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1968, He married Joyce
Ann Walker in Lawton, Oklahoma on January 23,1967.
After graduation Don began his career working for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in
Oklahoma City in 1968 with a door-to-door book of business; he quickly succeeded and was
promoted to management. In 1972, he left Metropolitan Life to work for a local broker for a few
years.
In 1976, he founded his own company, Estate Concepts. Don sold primarily fixed annuities and
some life insurance to teachers eventually in 1980, he added business and estate planning. In
1999, he expanded his business by adding investments to his clients’ options. Don had always
desired to provide a variety of services to his clients. Don also enjoyed public speaking and
was a seminar speaker for several years. Don sold his business and retired in 2021.
His brother-in-law, Charles Walker, led Don to the Lord in 1970. Don grew as a student of the
Bible, and he taught a Sunday School Class at Heritage Baptist Church in Oklahoma City for
many years. More than anything else, however, he enjoyed leading others to Christ. Don always
had a pocket full of tracts to give to anyone he met.
Don had many business and professional relationships over the years and was loved by clients
and friends alike. His outgoing personality enabled him to make friends easily.
Don collected memorabilia of Elvis Presley and the Beatles, especially LP records. He also
accumulated autographs of entertainment celebrities. He enjoyed playing golf and tried to play
every Friday afternoon when time allowed. Don also enjoyed traveling, hunting, and sports. He
was a devoted OU football fan.
Don is survived by his wife of 57 years of the home, Joyce Walker McFarland, a son, Darin
McFarland of Denver Co, daughter, Felicia McFarland of Oklahoma City and daughter Michelle
McFarland of Yukon, OK, grandsons Tristan McFarland and Cameron Frank, a great grandchild,
and a host of relatives and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Robert Lee & Lillian Margerette McFarland and his
brothers, Donnie and Bobby Lee McFarland.
