Nora (Burke) Chapman, 85, of Ellington, beloved wife to the late Gardner Chapman, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on Friday, August 30, 2024. She was born on February 25, 1939, in Hartford, to Kenneth and Elizabeth (Traver) Burke.
Nora grew up in Rocky Hill before moving to North Granby. She graduated from Simsbury High School in 1957. She briefly attended UCONN before working in the banking industry. In the mid-1960’s, she and her first husband, Wayne Adams, settled in Ellington, where they raised their family. In the 80’s she remarried after meeting the next love of her life, Gardner Chapman. The two of them loved and supported each other as he built his rental property and farming businesses into something to be admired. Nora loved music! For over 50 years, she sang and played piano and organ regularly at Ellington Congregational Church. In her spare time, Nora was an avid UConn women’s basketball fan. She also regularly watched UConn men’s basketball, the Red Sox, and the Patriots. Nora enjoyed playing cards, while laughing and sharing stories with her “nickels” friends. Wherever she was, her dog was too, or at least waiting in the car. She loved her pups very much. Tina, Tiger, Pepper, Lacey, Shadow, Lullaby and Poppy were her favorite companions through the years. She was warm and caring in a genuine way that made people comfortable in her presence. She shared that love and kindness with her family throughout her many years. Her most treasured roles in life were being a loving daughter, sister, mom, grandma, and great grandmother.
Nora is survived by her two sons, Christopher Adams and his wife Mary-Jo of Vernon, and Timothy Adams of Ellington; her six grandchildren, Daniel, Sean and his wife Mecca, Connor and his wife Emily, Kallista, Tobias, and Katie; her four great-grandchildren, Ellanora, Grayson, Zoey, and Mabel; her two sisters, Lee Fedus and her husband Stephen of Colchester, and Irene Burke-Moran of Plymouth, MA; as well as a niece, several nephews, and many dear friends. She was predeceased by both husbands and by her son, Jay P. Adams.
A memorial service for Nora will be celebrated on Saturday, September 7, 2024, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Ellington Congregational Church, 72 Main St., Ellington, with a time of visitation prior to the service from 9-9:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery, Ellington. Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home in Vernon are in care of her arrangements.
