John “Jack” Joseph Gallagher, 89 yrs of age, of Lindenhurst, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on August 30, 2024, in his home of sixty-years.
Jack was born in 1935 to Joseph and Mary Gallagher and raised in Maspeth, NY. As a child, he loved playing handball and stickball with the neighborhood kids. He played the piano and was an accomplished drummer, performing as a member of the American Legion Jr. Drum Corp., as well as the Fordham University Marching Band.
Catholic school educated, Jack attended St. Stanislaus Elementary School, Bishop Loughlin High School, and Fordham University where he earned a Bachelor of Economics degree.
Jack served in the United States Army, and was stationed in Germany 1958 - 1960. He was a mathematics teacher for 30 years, retiring from East Islip School District in 1991. After retirement, Jack embarked on another 20-year career as a school photographer with Quasar (Lifetouch).
Jack was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and for many years was actively involved with the Holy Name Society, The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), as well as a volunteer for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul food bank.
Jack is survived by his Loving wife of 66 years, Barbara (Mohnhaupt), and his children, Mary (Michael) Rodriguez, Barbara (John) Manion, John Jr., (Ursula), James, deceased, Frances (Patrick) Danaher, Joseph (Rachel), Margaret (Jacques) Lilly, and Bridget (Martyn, deceased) Matheson as well as 16 Grandchildren and 5 Great grandchildren.
A “Jack” of all-trades, master of most, Jack was passionate about music, photography, camping, fishing, and clamming to name a few.
Visitation hours will be held at Lindenhurst Funeral Home, 424 South Wellwood Ave., on Wednesday, September 4th from 2:00pm - 4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 5th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lindenhurst at 9:45am.
