Jeffrey Stewart Horowitz, 79, a significant figure in the nuclear energy safety field, died on August 30 in Select Specialty Hospital in San Diego, after a long illness. His devoted wife Lynn was by his side.
He was born to Samuel and Anna Horowitz on February 2, 1945, in Bayonne, New Jersey, and demonstrated an interest in engineering from an early age. He received his bachelor's degree from Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Institute of Technology) before going on to earn his doctorate from MIT in 1972.
He was particularly interested in alternative energy and worked for several engineering firms, Argonne National Laboratory, and the Department of Energy before becoming a consultant for Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), where he and his close colleague Bindi Chexal developed the CHECWORKS computer program, used in nuclear power plants around the world to help ensure safe operations. In later years, he served as a consultant to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He saw nuclear energy as an inexpensive, plentiful source of energy and wanted to ensure that it was used safely and responsibly.
His achievements earned him numerous honors, as did his many scholarly publications and his patents. He was a Fellow of both the American Nuclear Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He also co-authored several books, including one with French engineers about power plant safety.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed Israeli folk dancing, gardening (especially growing roses), reading, photography, and using his engineering skills for home repairs.
He is survived by his beloved wife Lynn Waldron Horowitz; his sister, Susan Horowitz Branch; his niece, Jessica Branch; his nephew, Glenn Branch and his wife, Sujatha, and son, Vikram; his sister-in-law, Willa Fowler, and brothers-in-law Brian Waldron and Wayne Waldron and his wife Velma, as well as a large family of in-laws who were devoted to him. He will also be missed by the many friends he made in every stage of his life, who will remember him as a good man who was as honorable in his professional life as he was in his private life.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 13, at Temple Adat Shalom, 15905 Pomerado Road, Poway, California. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery, W. North Union Road, Auburn, Michigan.
