Mavis LaNell Burnaman Childers Obituary

Mavis LaNell Burnaman Childers was born May 4, 1933 and passed peacefully into her eternal life on August 30, 2024 at home surrounded by her loving family. To family, friends and all who knew her, she will be remembered fondly for her generous spirit, strong faith, positive outlook, quick wit, sharp mind and her kind, loving nature.

Mavis or “LaNell” to her friends was born in Etoile, Texas to Clifton N. Burnaman and Frances D. Burnaman. Her family moved to Houston during her childhood where she graduated from Jeff Davis High School. She met Malcolm “Mac” Moody Childers, Jr. while working together at the United Gas Company. They married in August of 1956 and happily raised four children.

LaNell had many passions, but her greatest love was her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She was an excellent role model of how to live a kind, selfless and compassionate life. As a devoted grandmother, her grandchildren adored her. She also loved poetry, and was involved with the Houston Poetry Fest for many, many years enjoying the gatherings of talented poets and coordinating events. She was a proud and devout member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church serving as a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Guild.  As a huge Houston Astros fan all her life, she watched most of the games, cheering them on with her signature “Woohoo” whenever they scored a run or had a great defensive play. She was so excited when her grandson Kevin began working for the Astros.

She lived her life in service to others and worked as an office manager for several organizations including Alko International, the American Lung Association and Fresenius Dialysis Clinic. Given her strong work ethic, she continued working until she was 82 when her children finally convinced her it was time to retire!

LaNell was preceded in death by her father, Clifton N. Burnaman, mother Frances D. Burnaman, husband Mac Childers, stepmother, Esther Burnaman, sister Rhonda Stafford, brother Randy Burnaman, brother Alton Burnaman and nephew Alton Burnaman, Jr.

She is survived by her four children, Michael E. Childers and fiancée Carmelita, Thomas E. Childers and wife Marilyn, Lisa Childers David and husband Derby, and Charles  “Chuck” E. Childers. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren; Daniel Childers, Juliet Childers, Lauren David, Evan David and wife Roxanna, Courtney Childers, Kevin Childers, and Kelsey Childers. She is also survived by her sisters, Janie Roberts and Betty Hadden, sister-in-law Jody Patterson and husband Chuck as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved her dearly.
