Demetris Michaelides Obituary

IIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Demetris Michaelides. Demetris passed peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92. Demetris is survived by Helena and her husband Dimitri, George and his wife Anita, his grandchildren Peter and Alex, Alex and Laura & her husband Chris and their children Luka and Ana.

Demetris was a much-loved father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a proud Chartered Accountant director for the federal government (as he would increasingly remind everyone as he got older), a very proud Cypriot Greek, and an especially proud singer. Demetris was born in Cyprus and moved to Canada at the age of 23 in 1955 with the help and love of his siblings who were already in Toronto, attended university, and became a CA at a time when it was very difficult to do so as a foreigner. He rose through the ranks to become a Chief of Audit at Revenue Canada. He met his beautiful Finnish wife, and the love of his life, Tuulikki, at the Austrian Club in Toronto, where with his charm, unwavering confidence and persistence, and despite several initial refusals, he managed to finally get her to dance with him, and then to marry him. Demetris lovingly raised Helena and George, was an amazing grandfather to Alex, Peter, Laura, and Alex, and was lucky to be blessed with great-grandchildren Luka and Ana. He loved his parents, his family in Cyprus, Greece, and Australia, his nieces and nephews, his many close lifelong friends who he cherished and who cherished him, and his direct family who were his biggest source of pride and joy. He had a “love for life”, enjoyed a good debate, and liked giving advice, which often took the form of an “informative" lecture, but mostly he loved to laugh and make others laugh. He had charisma and witt and thrived in social situations. He made a lasting impression wherever he went, always good (mostly), ALWAYS memorable without exception. He was known for injecting fun into any situation and creating meaningful memories that his family and friends will never forget. Demetris never got over the passing of his wife Tuulikki and his time without her was difficult. His family takes solace in knowing he is at peace, singing opera and his favourite Greek songs in heaven (probably non-stop and too loud), dancing the tango with his eternal love, and watching over his beloved family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Hellenic Hope Centre (For Persons with Special Needs), Doctors Without Borders, or a charity of your choice.
