Ruth Irmgard (Moline) Eddy, 95, of Durand, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Hospice House of Shiawassee County. A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:00am at the First Baptist Church of Durand, 804 W. Main St. Durand. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00am. Pastor Nick Boeke officiating.
Ruth was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on July 8, 1929, the daughter of German immigrants Henry and Theresa Fleming. The family moved to the US and settled near Quakertown, PA. Ruth became a US citizen in 1951. She attended several colleges earning Bachelor's degrees from both Goshen College and Taylor University, a Master's degree from the University of Maryland, and Christian Ed certificate from Grace University. At various times she was employed as a salesclerk, nurse's aide, secretary, and finally - teacher.
Prior to her marriage to Donald Moline in 1957, Ruth taught in schools in Nebraska, Indiana, and Kansas. Her 38-year teaching career included four years in a mission school in Arctic Alaska and three years in Okinawa Japan. She and her husband were partners in these endeavors. Ruth retired from Durand schools in 1992 after 22 years in the district. Donald passed away in 1993.
Ruth married Frank Eddy at First Baptist Church in Durand in 1997. He passed away in 2020. Ruth was a member there for almost 50 years filling many positions in its ministry. Teaching children about the love of Jesus was her passion.
At various times she volunteered at the Durand union station, the Durand Senior Care Center, and served two years as the secretary of MARSP (public school retirees). For her continued involvement in the schools as a volunteer librarian after her retirement, she was presented with the School Bell Award. In 2004 she published Arctic Challenge, the story of her years in the Arctic.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Deborah (Roderick) Sebree; sons Gerald (Danelle) Moline and Wade Moline; stepdaughters Claudia Eddy and Julie (Scott) Raysin; stepsons Tim Eddy and Shannon Eddy; 10 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister Esther Tews; sisters-in-law Dina Fleming and Barbara Eddy.
In addition to her parents and first husband Donald Moline, second husband Frank Eddy, Ruth was predeceased by two brothers, William and Henry Fleming, and a-brother-in-law Paul Tews.
