James P McChesney Obituary

Jay McChesney, born James Paul, affectionately known by his family, friends and colleagues as the "All American Hero," passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024, at the age of 55. His life was a shining example of bravery, humor, and a deep commitment to his family and helping others.

Born on December 26, 1968, Jay grew up in West Orange, NJ. Jay loved playing drums in his band and still holds the West Orange High School swim record for the 50 Free. After high school, while working at the Parsippany Pathmark, Jay met the love of his life, Jennette Reiling. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Jordan (23), James (21), and Joe (19), who were the pride and joy of Jay's life.

Jay joined the Coast Guard in 1991. He served in various roles, such as Coxswain (Vallejo, CA), Helicopter Rescue Swimmer 362 (Mobile, AL), Boatswain’s Mate (Manasquan, NJ). Jay retired as Chief Petty Officer in 2015. This experience and his continued desire to help others beyond his own self led to him working as a Flight Nurse with Atlantic Health for almost 20 years. Additionally, Jay was a Registered Nurse at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. There, he was known for his quick wit, charismatic personality, and ability to bring light to even the most challenging situations. Jay’s comedic delivery was legendary among his colleagues and patients, often providing comfort in moments of crisis.

Beyond his technical expertise, he was a caring mentor to many. Jay was always willing to share his knowledge and support others in their professional journeys. His colleagues admired him not only for his skill and bravery but also for his humility, character and the genuine concern he showed for every person he helped.

Jay was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Jay had a passion for fishing, music and cooking. His larger-than-life personality, humor, warm heart, and boundless energy made him the life of any gathering. He left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

In addition to his wife and kids, Jay is survived by his mother Kay McChesney; sister Mary and Tony parents of Amy Wood; sister-in-law Tina and Kevin parents of Jake, Reagan, and Scott Murphy; brother-in-law Jack and Nelly parents of Chuck, Marty and Lydia Reiling; brother-in-law Jason and Kara parents of Alex, Carter and Kate Reiling; mother-in-law Marilyn Reiling and Michelle, their family dog. They take solace in knowing that he lived a life full of purpose, joy, and love. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his courage, kindness, and the countless lives he touched.

Jay, your heroism will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you. Rest in peace.
