Jean V. Christenson Obituary

Jean V. Christenson, of Chippewa Falls, WI died on August 30, 2024, at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire, WI. She was 95 years old.

She was born in Hillsdale, WI on April 11, 1929, to Arthur W.and Gladys (Davidson) Sattergren. The third of five children, she showed at an early age a talent for writing—she often won prizes for her short stories submitted to the local newspaper—and her penmanship was textbook-perfect.

Jean attended grade school in the Africa school district, Barron County; Barron High School (Salutatorian); and Eau Claire Vocational School.  Her first full-time job was at National Pressure Cooker. Not long after that she began working for Hoeppner-Bartlett Construction Company; it was there that she met Cliff.

She married Clifford T. Christenson on November 15, 1952. They lived in Eau Claire for two years before they bought an 80-acre farm in the town of Wheaton, Chippewa County in 1954.  As she described it, she “became a full-time housewife”. She became a mother in 1957 when Mark was born.

She had worn many hats: secretary, bank auditor, Sunday School teacher, Bible study leader.  Jean worked for Rehabilitation Services for the Blind, delivered Meals On Wheels, and was involved in the Big Sister program.  She led the Howard-Wheaton 4-H club for many years.  She was the clerk of the Town of Wheaton.  She wrote articles published in the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram and The Country Today, primarily human-interest stories and memories of her life.

She is survived by her sister Carol (Harley) Barfknecht, sister Maxine (Jim) Williams, son Mitch (Roxanne), daughter-in-law Diane, sisters-in-law Clarice (Dave) Kunferman and Janice (Dave) Kneer; grandchildren Tawna (Tim) Sikora, Brock (LauraCarolevschi) Christenson, Darsel (Justin) Shavlik, and Nathan (Rachel) Christenson; great-grandchildren Blake, Jeffrey, Abigail, and Gabrielle Sikora; Alex and Olivia Christenson;Laila, Calvin, and Spencer Shavlik; and Clara Christenson; numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Percy(Mary Beth) Sattergren, her sister Marcia (“Red”) Williams, her daughter Beth, her son Mark, and her husband Clifford; brothers-in-law Don (Marie), Merle (Louise), Leland (Cecilia),Richard, and Roy (Delores), Red Williams, and Harley Barfknecht.

Jean’s family wishes to thank the staffs of Oakwood Villa, Altoona; Oak Gardens Assisted Living, Altoona; DoveHealthcare-West, Eau Claire; and St. Croix Hospice for their care.
