Elmer “Elmo” Matthews passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024 at age 86. He is survived by one grandson, Kevin Matthews (Mary Beth); great grandchildren, Kaley, Brinley, Colton, Josiah, and Keith; one brother, John Matthews (Janet); and other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen Matthews; three sons, Joel Matthews, Keith Matthews, and Artie Matthews; one daughter, Kellie Matthews; and one grandson, Brent Matthews. Elmo was a resident of Fultondale for over 60 years. He retired from the City of Fultondale after just short of 40 years of service. He was instrumental in building and maintaining Black Creek Park and A.T. Holt Park which is now the home of Fultondale Promenade. Elmo umpired baseball, softball and volleyball for over 40 years. There was never a time you didn’t see him working at some park during this time. After retirement you could find him working in his wood shop making different crafts or Alabama memorabilia as he was an avid Alabama football fan. Special thanks to Karen Matthews who was a loving caregiver in his last days. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Walker Chapel Memorial Gardens.
