Douglas Loewen Obituary

Douglas Allan Loewen

1928 - 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Douglas Allan Loewen on August 30, 2024 at the age of 95 following a short illness. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 65 years, Willa (nee Campbell), who predeceased him December 18, 2018; beloved father to Doug, Nancy (Lloyd Mohr), and David (Lynn) ; loving grandfather to Christopher(Jen), Meagan(Courtney), Aaron, Jeffrey, Allison, and Matthew; great grandfather to Isaak and Abby. Doug was predeceased by his parents John and Ada and his siblings Howard, Jim, and Alice.

Doug was born in Elkhorn, Manitoba on October 28, 1928. He was the second in a family of five boys and two girls.

In 1948, he began his banking career in Virden, Manitoba with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce(CIBC) shortly after graduating from high school. From there Doug was transferred to Winnipeg, Manitoba and was later transferred to Saskatchewan where he worked in Vonda, Eston, and Willow Bunch. It was while posted in Eston that he met Willa Campbell and they were married in 1953. From that point in time Doug moved up the CIBC ladder transferring across the country spending time in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (1953); Winnipeg, Manitoba (1958); Thunder Bay, Ontario (1969); Saint John, New Brunswick (1972); Halifax, Nova Scotia (1976); Toronto, Ontario (1985); and then back to Halifax (1986). In 1990, Doug retired from the bank as Vice President, Corporate Banking for Atlantic Canada. Doug contributed to the various communities he lived in through volunteer activities that included Rotary Clubs and other non-profit Boards.

In his retirement, Doug and Willa enjoyed traveling to Florida, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and visiting family and friends. In 2004, Doug and Willa moved to the retirement community of Briar Hill in Alliston, Ontario. There they made many new friends and continued to enjoy traveling and playing golf. Doug kept in touch with the many CIBC friends he had made across the country and always attended the retirement functions held in Toronto. After Willa’s passing, Doug continued to enjoy golfing, gardening, participating in neighborhood activities, trying new cooking recipes, following the developments in the lives of his grandchildren, and enjoying life. He fiercely maintained his independence and remained remarkably resilient.

Special thanks to the staff and volunteers at both Stevenson Memorial Hospital and Matthews House Hospice for their compassion and support.

Doug will be dearly missed by family and friends. In his honour and remembrance, donations may be made to Matthews House Hospice, Alliston, Ontario (https://www.matthews.house/).
